First, relax.

Then do a search on this forum for CFRD. There have been lots of posts about it. I asked one myself when my son was diagnosed and got lots of help. It turned out his was due to a med. and it went away as soon as he stopped it.

There are many people here with CFRD who manage it well. I'm sure you will get lots of support! Good luck

I know mine has nothing to do with my meds.cause I don't take any. Well except for my enzymes soI don't think it has anything to do with meds. Dang it!!! First my brother needs a double lung transplant and now ME...it's my turn!

I am not officially dx with CFRD, but I have had times that my sugars were high enough for long enough to require insulin. First time was when I was pregnant & was dx with Gestational Diabetes. I had to return to work after the appointment & was a total basket case so I couldnt work. Thankfully my husband worked at the same place & he came down to my office, we spoke with my Supervisor together & then we left early to get the glucose monitor, insulin etc that I had gotten scripts for. The 2nd time was while on Prednisone. That was awful because they wouled SKYROCKET without eating carbs so I scared the nurses a few times. The last time was this year when I wasnt on meds etc. It turns out it was from dehydration & infection, but each time puts me at a higher risk. Its much like anything else with CF.....you freak, you learn, you adjust, you move on! Take one day at a time!

Hi Cutecurlz

like your name you must have nice curly hair <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Do not worry at all. Worrying of course will increase your Sugars and that is a given. So try and relax as much as possible. Exercise and relaxing are so helpful when it comes to blood sugars. I do believe with proper diet meaning eating what you want but in a more controlled fashion you can keep your diabetes mild and perhaps even keep it boarderline for many years. I would talk to your doctors and buy a glycometer. You might be ablel to get reinbursed for yours through medicare. I would contact them if you have medicare and they will send you the stuff for free.

In the meantime, I would keep a diary of what you eat and what your sugars run around. It is good to check before your meals and if you think they are higher than normal you might have to either workout or take insulin. You have not told us anything about your diabetes as everyone is different.

Before my double lung tx, I had to take two units per meal and now after the transplant I do not take any insulin. I exercise after a heavy carb meal and I am fine.

So keep in mind that being nervous will just increase your glucose readings. Relax and learn how to take control of your diabetes.

Take care of yourself

Hey there
Try to breathe. I know I was scared when I was first diagnosed too - that was about 7 years ago - but all will be okay. It is just an adjustment.

Like Risa said every case is different. Are you taking insulin to control your sugars? or are you regulating them with diet and exercise? I take insulin shots with every meal and 1 for long acting insulin as well. When I was first diagnosed I took 2 shots a day(breakfast and dinner). I was having a hard time with lows so they changed my regimen.

I would definitely look into getting a meter. If you have made an appointment with an endocrinologist they may be able to set you up with one. Otherwise I would try to go to a Walgreens, if you have one near you, I have seen them having several great discounts on them recently. Also something you may want to do before you buy a meter - if you do indeed have to buy it - is the cost of supplies such as test strips and lancets. Also you may want to look into a machine that requires less blood for the sample. I had an Accuchek for a period of time and had a hard time getting enough blood for the sample, now I have a One Touch Ultra Soft and love it. It requires a tad less blood and has a calender, a log book and diet/meal log and everything. That way it can record everything in the machine and you don't have to write everything down.

You will be fine I am sure. In comparison to CF Diabetes is a cake walk. I will say this though. Do try your hardest to keep your sugars under control and at a normal level. When your blood glucose is high our bodies think we are sick and start to fight an infection - that in many cases may not be there - this can cause inflammation in areas such as the lungs which is something we already have enough of.

Just try to calm down a bit. I know it is overwhelming but look at it this way. At least you know what the problem is and you are not sick and continuing to get sicker with no one being able to find out the problem. When you know the problem you can take steps to alleviate/treat it.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Hi Cutecurlz here (Yes I do have natual curly red hair ty) I just found out this morning that I was CFRD....so at this moment I am not taking anything for it, I have an appointment on Monday to talk allllllllllllllllll about it. I picked up the glycometer and alllll the accessories that went with it today and it was covered ( all I had to pay was the dispencing fee which was like 20.00) so that's ok. So once Monday comes and goes I will keep you all informed about what's going to happen. TTYL

Good Luck at your appointment. Hopefully they are able to answer your questions. Alot of the stress over being diagnosed may be that you do not know much yet. Hopefully afte your appointment you will be able to relax a little bit more and it won't be as stressful.

Good luck with the appointment,
Lindsey

I was diagnosed with diabetes 26 years ago. It is just another bump in the road as my old doctor would have said. Granted it is a scary bump, but you will get over it and learn all about it , deal with it and manage it . Exercise is important and can help control blood sugar. If you have to go on insulin it isnt so bad, a lot of us on here are insulin dependant. You get used to it believe me. You can still eat pretty much anything you want within limits of coarse while taking insulin to cover what you eat. Now if you arent insulin dependant, exercise and diet may make all the difference for you. I know with cf dieting is always frowned upon, the more calories the better for us, but if you are able to limit sweets and still have a good amount of calories going in, you may do well. It is very scary i know...... But it isnt the end of the world. Stay calm ,and remember diabetes is manageable, you will get thru this and feel more comfortable once you learn all the facts.
