Just started Hypertonic Saline...Have Q's

I really believe that the people who have a bad experiece with HS should still stick with it, especially since there are actual studies showing it's effectiveness, and there are many people (myself included) who have been helped by it greatly. When I first started it I also got bad coughing spells, tightness, burning in the throat... and that was only on 3%. I've been doing it for over a year; I did my own research and made my own at first. Now I've worked my way up to 10%. It still tightens my chest for a time, but the amount of mucus it pulls from the lungs is unreal. Breathing technique is also important; I get more out when I breath deeply, methodically, and I tighten my breathing muscles. I've also used a slightly hypertonic solution in cleaning my sinuses, which also works great.

oh shoot. that was me above. I also wanted to say that HS has been shown to be nearly as effective as pulmozyme, or Dornase, or however you guys say it.

This is Jennifer the original poster. I think I might be an odd ball. I do not cough as much from the HS. When I do cough it is almost like gagging from the salt dripping down my throat. And I am not getting stuff out that much. My chest is still tight afterwards.

I did talk with my doctor and he said it is a natural bronchospasm treatment and tightness can be normal. His answer was I might need to do more Albuterol treatments.... YUK!!

Anyone else out there having these symptoms/problems

Jennifer...

EXACTLY what happens to me! I cough very little during the treatment, and end up feeling SOB throughout the day (even WITH albuterol twice a day and before HS!).... I also notice I will start a coughing fit now throughout the day when least expected... don't know if its from the HS, but it happened the other day in Bed, Bath, and Beyond and I thought I was going to die I was coughing to hard. I did cough more stuff out than usual though, and that's why I'm sticking with it. I won't have a PFT until Sept. though, so don't know if its helping or hurting.

I also notice my lungs feel really sore throughout the day since I started HS a couple weeks ago. Hmmmm....

I have had some recent coughing fits too!!!! I am gonna stick with it for now. I have a pft coming up in August. But, I am only doing the HS when not on TOBI. So, for now I have June on HS, July no hs and then August when I do my PFT I will be on HS for second time. I will do it again in August and also see what my PFT says. But I do not feel the same way as others and wish I did. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Jennifer,
I also feel let-down that I am not getting the results others seem to have with this. Its kinda odd, but I remember when I lived on the ocean in Cali, I felt sicker than I've ever felt and my PFTs were some of the worst they've ever been. So, obviously crisp, clean, salt water doesn't have the miracle effect of me like it does on others. Keep me posted what your PFT turns out. I will hope for the best for you!
