Just when I thought things were gonna get better...

I recently found out Monday, while applying for my unemployment, that I won't be getting paid for another month! The company that fired me had seemingly become exempt from the reason for my unemployment status, and I was considered as resigning status, therefore my unemployment is delayed!
On top of that, I'm supposed to pay this unreasonable amount of monthly payments for health and pension. The pension is a killer, because I have no idea that if I go to the states, I will get all that money back, or it will be with the new pension agreement with the U.S. (Agreement was made in 2005), so IF I actually retire, I'll have something to retire with!
Unfortunately, I still can't just UP and GO! So, I have to find a job, but this is a true test of my perserverence! I thought the true test was standing that jerk of a boss who got me here in the first place!!
Sometimes I wish I could be a cop here! The way some of them work is so ridiculous--they're such wimps!!
Anyway, I figure one of the best bets is to call the Consulate in Osaka to see what kind of help they can give me...considering I'm still a U.S. Citizen. It just feels like I got screwed in quitting a job, then getting fired from another! I can't let this happen to me anymore, and it really sucks when they are so much more knowledgeable about their laws that they exploit it (and me), to which I have to do so much extra research just to protect myself from letting it happen again. Sure nuff, I'd probably get rich writing a book on the "things they don't tell you when you come to live in Japan"!!

I didn't know you got fired, sorry to hear that. =-( I hope the consulate can help.

There is a radio show I like to listen to here in denver. Website www.troubleshooter.com He likes helping people with legal issues and questions (even if they are in Japan, it's actually happened before). Anyway, he has a huge network of people, so it's worth a shot. good luck!

Edit: I forgot, He has a toll-free number as well. 1 (866) 966-HELP (or 1 (866) 966-4357). There's usually someone to answer, even when the show is not on.

My dear analytical fred

I'm really sorry to hear this. I don't have any advice or suggestions because I'm not sure how all the politics work over there, but I will let you know I'm thinking of you and I think this sucks.

Are you going to have to prove that you got fired, and for what reason? Surely it's documented in your employee file.... if that information has disappeared, I'm sure that you can maybe (even if it's not what you wanted) tell whoever makes these decisions that "I didn't quit, I got fired, so if they are going to deny my unepmployment, I'll be happy to go BACK to work for them!!" Maybe that will get you some benefits??? Always worth a try, kill em with kindness (and a little bit of fire).

I would als talk to the US consulate, see what they can help you out with. Best of luck and keep us posted, I'm curious to hear the outcome and hope it's greatly in your favor!
