couldnt agree with you more!!! My boyfriend also smokes and it drives me nuts. He doesnt smoke around me but even if im 20 feet away, you can still take in a little. He has a really bad cough every morning and sometimes I hear his lungs weazing at night. He sounds worse then me. I told him he needs to go get a chest xray to see whats going on in there. I try to tell him how many adults and children suffer, but he just doesnt get it. If my best friend needed new lungs and so did a person with cf, I would choose to give the lungs to the person with cf. Its the right thing to do. I am willing to do anything to anything to put an end to smoking! Its just too difficult to watch someone destroy their lungs while others suffer.

Oh I definitely agree that smokers should get less priority. And I know of some that would never dare feel like they deserve a transplant, my godfather's dad smoked and got COPD and he told him that he did it to himself and although he stopped, he didn't want a transplant because he wanted it to go to someone more deserving. I think more smokers should have this outlook.

Kinda like those who don't want to be organ donors but as soon as they need an organ they're ready to be listed and expect one from someone else! I think you should have to be an organ donor to be placed on any list, and have a HISTORY of being a donor!

Anyways, at least for someone who smoked to be listed, they have to have been smoke free for 2yrs...I think its 2, might be longer. You have to be able to prove it too and they usually only get ONE lung, where as CFers have to get TWO. That is also why they usually seem to get txed faster, its easier to find one healthy lung than two.

I'm not irritated by people smoking, and I believe they have every right in the world to do it, but I do think it's a shame that they take for granted the fact that they naturally have perfectly healthy lungs.

As I understand it an Active Smoker can not even be considered for a Lung TX.
I think they have to Prove they have quit 6 months to a year before Eval.

But I cannot why they even Need a rule such as this.
But I knew a smoker who received a single lung tx. He had quit a year
before. He was Not a Cfer.
