Does anyone have Kaiser
Permanente coverage in Southern California? What is your
opinion on the CF care? Trying to make a choice of insurance.
Kaiser will be less expensive, but I'm not to sure how the
care is. Thanks

Hi, I am 35 with cf.. I had kaiser as a child. I was pretty
healthy, so the care was limited. Depending on the severity of the
disease, you could probably get away with it for awhile. If you or
your child is needing constant meds and attention, I would give it
a lot of thought. They say they have good pulmonologists, but
I could never get one. they knew very little about c.f..
Belonging to a c.f. center with doctors belonging to the foundation
and being updated on the latest care is the best way to go. Do you
know about c.c.s. or g.h.p.p.

Thanks for the input guys!
Actually I saw that Kaiser has an accredited center, affiliated
with LA children's hospital. So they do have CF specialist
now ~ I just didn't know what kind of care they give!
I'd still be interested in anymore opinions.

Deanna ~ I have heard a little about ccs & ghpp.
My son has CF, but is relatively healthy. I think ccs is
based on income and.or health status. We wouldn't qualify
under either.
ghpp ~ I hope this program is still around when he becomes an
adult. I worry about his ability to get health care later on
in life. Do you have ghpp ~ is it decent help?

Doctors at Kaiser are incentivized not to prescribe expensive medications or to hospitalize patients.

Incentives like tends of thousands of dollars at the end of the year if they keep their admissions and drug Rx-es under a certain #.

I would be horrified to have Kaiser. Pay more money for better doctors.

Thanks for the post Amy ~ I had this concern about Kaiser
when we were offered this choice. But I have had some people
give great reports about Kaiser so my opinion started to
change.

I know someone whose daughter has a brain tumor and in their
opinion is being given excellent care and treatment. They
have said they would not trade their Kaiser for anything. So
I know their pediatric cancer center gives excellent care and
spares no expense. I was just wondering if the same
holds true for the CF center.

Please keep the replies coming ~ especially anyone who has had
personal experience with Kaiser and other centers so you can give
me a comparative.
Hi Browser,

I don't have Kaiser but I can tell you that I've had GHPP for 11 years now (since I turned 21) and they've been awesome! They can be tough to work with and do give you some headaches for sure, but at the end of the day ALL bills (hospital, meds, doctor visits etc) are covered 100%. The only hang up now is that if you qualify for Medical, then you have to use that first and then GHPP will be secondary. I have had only GHPP and they've covered everything 100%. I highly recommend them except I do warn against them taking a while sometimes to authorize stuff. Other that than they really are great to have.

With that, I've seen doctors at the USC University Hospital CF Center. Everything has been really great there.

I am in Northern Ca and have never personally had kaiser so you
know what do I really know...but all reports I've heard
are...Kaiser is great unless you are sick and heaven help you if
you get sick.

I wouldn't let Kaiser cut my hair let alone into me. I don't
think it's about them having bad or good Dr.'s I think it's a
rotten heath care system.

I work for and have Kaiser insurance, While I was waiting for my
health insurance to kick in I was at UCLA they told me the Pan city
facility had the best pulmonary department and Dr Hannanel was the
guy to see. I also asked my former Dr from boston about
Kaiser he also said Hannanel was the guy to go to. I've been
seeing him for almost 5 years now and think is one of the better
docs I've been to.

That isn't true Amy, it's not incentive based, My doctor has been
trying to get me to go on meds I really don't want to take.
Kaiser is good you just need to find right primary care doc,
my wife went through 6 before she found someone she liked.

Thanks for the reply Chaggie~
I know the Kaiser CF clinic is in Panorama City. Is your
doctor at the clinic with Dr. Lieberthal (the Director of the
CF clinic)?

Or is he a highly recommended pulmonary doc? I assume he sees
adults only. Just trying to get a feel of what is the best
route to take if we decide to go to Kaiser.

Yes, he's in the clinic with Dr allison and Lieberthal, I don't
think he's exclusively adult but I've never asked either. If
my Doctor from Boston Children's Hospital recommended him, imo he's
highly recommended.

Just wanted to say that I don't know for sure but I would be it is incentive based... HMO's are incentive based all the way. Dr's get a kick back for each ref that they DON"T make.

We actually learned that in school. It is very, very, very sad... I feel really bad for the doctors because they are not able to make decisions.. Insurance companies rule the roost these days..

Amy and I don't always agree on a lot but I have to agree with her on this side. Kaiser is SO incredibly incentive based. I have heard some good stories, YES, but I have also heard SO many horror storeis about doctors witholding necessary meds. Especially in a CF situation because all of the CF meds are rediculiously expensive.

I would see if the Kaiser CF center could pass your contact information onto other CF families in the area and have them call you (do it this way because they can't give you other patients contact info, but if you ask them to contact other patients and give them yours, they can do that). Talk to those families.

Also, contacting your local CF chapter is a great idea. They can put you in touch with other CF families in your area and you can ask aroudn and see if anyone else has Kaiser insurance.

As far as GHPP, my husband was on it as a secondary to my insurance. They did help pay for a lot of things that Tricare denied. It was only slightly a pain because you have to go to a CF center THEY choose but it's only once every 12 months and the GHPP pays for it, so you don't have to get a referral to go. We didn't have any copays associated with our insurance, but if we did they would have paid that too.

Good luck with your decision,
