Wow, that's one weird doc you have there.
Karate is an awesome form of fitness ESP for a cfer. It's my child's second year and she LOVES IT?..........
It's very physical and she sweats like crazy. Not so much contact involved from what I have seen, but has definitely helped with confidence and self esteem as well as improved her fitness levels.
I think it's awesome and I say go for it
Our docs also thought it was a great choice of fitness...........

I say any fitness is good fitness!

This is something we've been considering for our 7 year old with CF too and have been discouraged because he has an enlarged liver. But the biggest fear/question I have is what about the bare feet and germ issue?

One thing that I was taught by my parents when growing up is that there is nothing I can't do. Kids will get hurt, sick, and things will happen but one thing you can't do is keep them safe from everything. You need to let them live especially if it is something that keeps them active.
I don't know how many times as I was growing up I heard I am lucky to be alive or I shouldn't be able to do the things I do especially with the CF I have. Till this day the doctors tell me I can't go on like this forever and evidently CF will catch up with me.
I credit the lack of medications, treatments, and overall health to exercise. I have always loved sports and being active with friends. Instead of listening to the doctors and putting me in a bubble me parents encouraged me to be normal and active. Please do the same with the people you care about.

I hope that this doctor isn't your cf specialist or I feel sorry for you. I was asking my regular doctor today if some of my stomach problems could be from my pancreas since my daughter has cystic fibrosis. No, she told me. If you had cf then we'd know by now. Oh boy!!

Running man, totally agree. Very well said

Mindy, bare feet never crossed my mind I guess that's because the place we go to is so damn clean I could kiss the floor
Not only that, be she has a shower when we get home due to that fact that she gets so sweaty. There are much worse things out there then the kids being bare feet on mats.
If you look at it that way, then they can't do gymnastics, swimming, aqua aerobics etc
Just my thoughts!

No shoes at all are allowed at all on the dojo.............
So it's probably cleaner than most peoples homes.................ever thought about how much dirtier our shoes may be, sticking our feet in them very day or slopping around in a pair of flip flops day in day out!

Well in greece we have only one cf specialist for children in athens(there are another two for the grown ups -one of them is going to have a retirement soon). He is responsible for about 400-500 patients....he gives a real struggle to watch every single one and dont leave anyone dissapointed..as for my question about karate perhaps he was unaware of martial arts..perhaps he has also too much on his mind...really dont know.
Theres one cystic fibrosis department in athens only and now due to the economic crisis its gonna be merged with the pediatric department -become one....things arent very well here but still we keep our hopes that better days will come for our children...

Oh please. Its that kind of overprotective BS from the medical profession that put kids in an early grave. Many docs told my parents I shouldnt exercise. Hogwash. They got a second opinion and found a doc who said if I didnt get out and run around, they should chase me out of the house! So I ran, raced horses, did just about everything I could think of. It was all that activity, the thrill of life, that has kept me alive. Sure, I got hurt, like any kids does. But I was in such good shape I healed quickly. Sports also made me mentally tough too, and that is half the battle with CF.

I cant say it enough to parents. ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO BE ACTIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Build bone and muscle strength, challenge their wind, get their appetite up with good old fashioned activity. And most importantly, teach them how to LIVE, not how to die.

Runningman- sounds like our parents were cut from similar cloth.
