Kawasaki Disease

I haven't heard anything about carpet. That's interesting, though. I found this on the US Department of Health & Human Services:

"The cause of Kawasaki disease isn't known. The body's response to a virus or infection combined with genetic factors may cause the disease. However, no specific virus or infection has been found, and the role of genetics isn't known."

We only have a small bit of carpet in our bedroom, no other room of the house, but we did just get back from Michigan about a week ago and there we stayed in a couple hotels...kinda remembering that the carpet may have been a bit wet one of the nights.

This is just nuts... two (possibly) genetic conditions for DS? I don't think hubby's and my genes work together too well (Except for the fact that we think Parker is perfect in every other aspect )

Update on Parker:

He's basically still the same. Red rash, swollen eyes, and gets hives if he doesn't have benadryl in him (and sometimes he gets them even if he does). The fever has still been high, almost 103 at times and sometimes won't come down with Tylenol.

Docs have to wait for the 5th day of the fever before treating him, to rule out that it's not a virus... but this waiting is AWFUL! I wish they could just fix him already, I feel so bad for him.

They said yesterday that if he was still having fevers today that they would set up an EKG and an Echocardiogram (?) for Monday. Then when those are done, they would start him on IVIG (Intravenous immunoglobin) and he will be on that for a minimum of 15 hours (yuck)

Thank you all for your input. I really do find the carpet thing interesting-may ask the docs about that today.

I found this on the MayoClinic.com site regarding causes of it: "No one knows what causes Kawasaki disease. A number of theories link the disease to bacteria, viruses, or environmental chemicals or pollutants, but none has been proved. Kawasaki disease doesn't appear to be hereditary." I would assume the chemical part would be the reason some believe it is linked to carpet cleaning?I really hope it is not Kawasawki's Disease and he gets better ASAP. He's got to be miserable with the hives and fever and all that.

UPDATE:

Parker is home! I'm so happy!

Last night after a high fever, he got cold. This morning he had a small fever (101.5) but after a morning nap he started acting normal. His rash and hives are gone, and he was running around and fever had gone down even farther to 99 without any Tylenol.

So, it must have been viral...that was definitely the worst I have ever seen either of my kids. No one else in the family has gotten it, so it still seems a little strange to me, but I'm so glad he's better!

Thank you all for your support through this.

Hip Hip HOORAY!!

I'm glad everything worked out for you all.

It's so nice to see the little guys get their spunk back!

Terry

PS, I keep looking for anything that says without a doubt that carpet cleaning can be the cause, and I can only find things that "hint" to it.

Statistically it seems in studies that have been done, more people with KS had been exposed to cleaned or spot cleaned carpet than not. It seems possible that we could on occasion be exposed without knowing it, so it would be possible that some of the ones denying being exposed were.

It seems they are no closer to figuring that out, but I will still keep my pets and kids off freshly cleaned carpet.

At least it is over for you and Parker!
