Keep motivated for exercise

I'm wondering what everyone here does for exercise. I used to work out a lot but now that my lung function is decreasing and I'm on O2, I hate exercising because I know I'm going to be uncomfortable, panting hard and coughing. Granted - I know if I do it, it will make me healthier, but I can't get the message through to my stubborn brain <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Anonymous,I have a bowflex machine and an exercise bike. On Average I use them 4 to 6 times a week the bike I ride about 20 to 30 minutes, the first ten minutes is the worst I usually have to get off the bike and cough at least twice.I then do the strength training for about 45 - 50 minutes. I am not in your position yet as far as needed o2, but I do know what you mean about staying motivated to exercise. I am 29 and was diagnosed at 22 and over the past 9 years there have been times when I have not exercised regularly and time when I have done it at all. I know that you are having trouble exercising and I think the best thing for you would be the exercise bike. You can go at your pace and if you need to take a break to cough then take one. But try to do at least 10 to 20 minutes. Don't give up!Dave 2 w/cf

i excersice in sperts, im 33 been hospitalized about 40 times or so and over the years ive gotten really into excersice and like now havent done anything for maybe a year, im pretty active though, but i know its beneficial to excersice but cant seem to get my lazy but to do it...i think everyone need motivation, whether its from family, friends, or doctors, best way is to get a workout partner, i know i did my most excercising when i had someone else to workout with, also another good source of excersicing is walking the dog, yeah for healthy people its not a big thing, but walking the dog around a block with minor hills can be a nice workout for a congested cfer...good luck

I use a treadmill (30 minutes 4-5 times per week). I do an albuterol treatment 30 minutes before to open up my lungs a little. I also use 5 liters of O2 during my exercise. Have you ever tried going to the pulmonary rehab center and having them check your )2 stats while exercising? It helped me to know my limits and what amount of oxygen flow I needed. Just a thought.

I'm going to start pulmo rehab next month (I haven't been able to go out in public for 6 months). I've checked my own stats while exercising (my parents bought a pulse oximeter) so I am able to track it. Unfortunately - I usually forget to! While walking - I'm usually in the mid 80s, but that's because I'm fighting infection - I'm feeling a heck of a lot better now so it's probably higher (I'm hoping)! My doc never mentioned bumping up my o2 while exercising - I was just told to only go up to 2 liters if I needed o2, I will ask next time I'm at the doc. I'm hoping to be well enough now that I won't need it much longer (I've only started using o2 this year).-Piper (original poster of this thread)
