I bought a bottle of Kefir today and almost finished the entire bottle. Kefir is like yogurt but better on the digestion and taste great. I also felt really relaxed after drinking a few glasses. From what I have been reading there are many health benefits and i am all for that. Since I love yogurt I decided to try Kefir. Just do not buy the plain. I bought the low fat blueberry one. There are many different flavors. Check out the website to learn more

I didn't check out the link, but kefir is really good. It's kind of an aquired taste, and it used to be made out of camel's milk! It a little sour, like liquid yogurt in taste, but more like half and half maybe in texture?, and is carbonated and has a teeny bit of alcohol in it. I had no idea it was healthful, but I really like it, so next time I have it, I'll remind myself it's a health drink.

You can make it at home, but I don't have the recipe/knowledge on me.

Hi Allie

For the Kefir I bought there is NO carbonation and NO alcohol. I am not sure what brand you buy. I buy mine at whole foods market and it is organic I believe. There are 174 calories per serving and there are 4 servings per bottle. I drank the entire bottle in one day. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> The kefir blueberry flavor is not bitter tasting at all. A few years ago, I bought kefir in the plain brand and yuck. I could not get myself to drink it. I am sorry I did not buy the flavored one. I am glad that I discovered it again.

14grams of protein and 21 grams of sugar (from blueberry concentrate) and about 25 grams of carbs. I workout while I drink this and have it for a midnight snack. I am going to buy a whole lot more today. I also eat yogurt but yogurt taste sweeter and I believe kefir is better for you besides it makes you feel good. I was kind of in a sad mood yesterday after listening to this song on the radio. I came hope and drank my kefir and after twenty minutes i was in a great mood. I later read that it makes you feel good. I felt as if I was drinking wine as I had the same relaxed happy feeling. I wonder what is has in it that makes me feel like that?

Just did a search on kefir and found that it is high in Tryptophan (amino acid) and that is why it makes you feel relaxed. Well I must say I love turkey and that is high in Tryptophan but the feeling I get when drinking kefir is so much better. Time to go shopping to buy some more

I called the company of the brand that makes the Kefir and she suggested that I buy the plain (has less sugar) and mix the blueberry with the plain until the taste is bearable. IT is better to have less sugar. I will try but hopefully I will get use to it.

I found the problem...according to Wikipedia : <blockquote>Quote<br><hr>This drink is prepared by inoculating cow's or goat's milk with the grains - or "beads" - of previous kefir batches. Kefir grains are a combination of probiotic bacteria and yeasts in a matrix of proteins, lipids and sugars. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Saccharomyces kefir are widely used, though the exact combination of bacteria and yeasts vary between cultures. The milk is incubated at room temperature for a day or more, during which the lactose is fermented. The resulting beverage is a sour, carbonated, slightly alcoholic drink. The consistency is similar to thin yoghurt. In fact, most commercially available American "kefir" lacks both carbonation and alcohol and is nothing more than liquid yogurt.<hr></blockquote>

You're drinking American kefir. I've had the regular stuff.

I am really excited by this because this morning I awoke with crystal clear lungs. My new lungs are always clear but in the past since my new transplant there was a slight noise I heard only when I awoke and I would clear my throat and I was fine. This morning clear all the way. From the reading I have been doing Kefir was used in the past to treat tubeculosis. So perhaps there is some evidence to treat other bacteriums with this. I have heard that plain ole lactobacilius helps prevent staph infections.
kefir is much better than yogurt and I went to Mercola.com who is a health food nut. He says the same thing. If anyone is interested go to <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://mercola.com">http://mercola.com</a> and type in kefir in his search engine.

They say that people who have a hard time digesting milk products can benefit from kefir

I am going to give this to my transplant doctor. I washed out the bottle and I hope she approves. I will print some information on this too. I know through my feeding tube I had in the hosital they gave some kind of acidolphilus by jarrow. Anything in moderation is good but just be on the safe side. I feel this would be prevent many people from getting cdiff and ecoli and whatever bugs affect our colons from antibiotics.

The Urban Homemaker (<A href="http://www.urbanhomemaker.com">www.urbanhomemaker.com</A>) carries freeze-dried Kefir starter for $4.50. Here's the blurb."Kefir is not only healthy, but delicious and easy to make. It is a fermented milk mixture which far surpasses other cultured milk products in it's nutritional benefits because the milk is not heated before adding the starter and because the very fine curd is easily digested. What I particularly like is that no appliance is needed! Kefir helps to restore the intestinal flora of anyone who wants to improve their health. It is easy to make and delicious when you add flavoroings, sweeteners or use it as the base for healthy smoothies. Since it is fermented, Kefir is tolerable for those who are lactose intolerant. Each package contains six packets of culture, each of which makes one quart. Leftover Kefir can also be used to start more batches without using additional packages of starter."You can throw in any sort of fruit. Most fruits are naturally sweet, so you wouldn't need sugar. But, if you didn't want the fruit, just wanted the plain Kefir sweeter, you can buy raw local honey and drop in a Tablespoon or two. Use raw, local honey because then you get the health benefits. If is it pasteurized, it loses the goodness and much of the bold flavor. Local honey is best because it helps your body acclamate to pollens in the area, in this way it can help desensitize people with pollen allergies.

Risa, why were you retransplanted, if I may ask? Are you married to the man who had the first lung transplant without the heart attached?
