Kerosene Heaters

When I was younger my Mom used Kerosene heaters to offset the cost of fuel (and parts of the house were colder than others) and as a CFer, I would not recommend it! I remember how bad they smelled and how much it irritated my breathing. It was not fun and I would not do it again.

Even when my hubby and I moved into the house that we have now, we had a wood burning fireplace, and we couldn't even use that because the smoke would irritate me. We got a natural gas insert put in the fireplace and that is soooo much better. We now use that to get the house heated up really quick if we need to.

Ok, wow - I'm so glad I asked this question! Obviously we are NOT going to route of kerosene - thank you for your feedback!

We had a Parrafin heater, I think that is the same as kerosene (why does the US have to rename things). We had it as a standby heater years ago. I remember it had pretty smelly fumes which did linger, but it did heat quite well.

I do not have CF, but when I was a kid I would have bronchitis all winter long. My mother thought it was from the cold weather, but the kerosene heater would really bother me. I have never been around a kerosene heater since I have moved out. I have NEVER had bronchitis in the winter again. Turns out that winter should have always been my best season, as allergies keep me sick the rest of the year.

Kerosene heaters hurt so many people each year, I don't even know why they have not been banned. The fire risk or risk of little ones getting burned is enough of a reason not to have one on it's own.

Good luck to you!
