I just wondered if anyone else has a tendency towards kidney infections and if so what they do to try to avoid the flare ups???

My doc told me to drink lots of liquids, include cranberry juice in your diet, and ummm how do i say.....after you know ...you have "relations" (as MRS Clump said on the Nutty Professor) make sure you pee. I have followed those rules and don't seem to get them anymore. Knock on wood they will stay away.

I myself have never had one, but my boyfriend has. His doc told him to go easy on the caffeine (he's a big tea drinker) and to take in more potassium. His doc actually told him to kind of stay away from other fruits except for bananas when the infection was present. He eats all fruits now, but maybe try to incorporate more potassium in your diet whether it's in vitamin form or just increasing your banana intake .

Hi Debbie,

I do. I've had one severe kidney failure and one not so severe. I'm about to start Cipro and I have to have my BUN and Creatine blood draws every 3 days to keep an eye on my kidneys. There's a chance my kidneys have just become "sensitive" and I have to really watch it. There hasn't been a rhyme or reason yet to the causes for my flare ups, but I just have to keep a close eye on them with oral antibiotics.

By the way, potassium for me during my severe episode was a huge no no. I guess it depends which levels are high and which ones are low for the individual. Potassium was one of the major factors for me that was dangerously too high. So bananas were deffinitly not recommended for me.

Debbie, have they determined why you have these flare ups?

I will admit i haven't brought it up with my CF doc too much, I'm being a chicken about hearing the words "kidney failure" that's really my biggest fear at this point, that would really suck an egg. I'm kind of hoping it's more of a "sensitivity" he he he

I know those words sound pretty harsh. The last time I delt with kidney issues, they told me that they don't really like using that term anymore unless you are in a serious case and using dialysis. The smaller flare ups that occur don't mean your kidneys have stopped working, so they now refer to those as something else, I don't remember exactly, but it is less dramatic sounding. They felt 'kidney failure' wasn't accurate since your kidneys CAN still work during the smaller episodes, they just have higher creatine or potassiums levels than normal. Hope that makes you feel a little better. If you're not on dialysis, then your kidneys really haven't "failed" you, they're just a little sick and need some TLC.

Usually you just have to stop whatever it is that's making your levels go high. I guess they're usually related to meds.

Okay, you gave me enough hope that it's not kidney FAILURE to send my Dr. an e-mail. I don't mind if they need a little TLC they just don't get to quit!!!!!!!!

I had a kidney infection from h*ll once. Truthfully, I had thought that it was just a really bad flu with a pulled back muscle, so I went on my merry way for a good month with horrible back pain, and I was continuously running fevers and throwing up. One night it was so bad I ended up in emerg. Doc told me that my kidney infection was so bad that it had almost reached my heart and I could have died. My heart was enlarged and running eratic. I ended up in hospital for a week on antibiotics, and couldn't even get out of bed to go to the washroom without help (didn't help that the washroom was also down the hall from me, and not in my room). My doctor told me to drink a ton of water and cranberry juice, or even water with lots of lemon in it because it flushes your kidneys out. Potassium was a big no-no for me, as when I was in emerg I was told that my potasium levels were super high.
