kidney stones

Shane, has your doctor recommended blasting the stone? I've had several stones and I just cannot imagine having one that large, especially causing pain to remain in the kidney.

2 yrs ago I had a whopping 17mm stone, a record size for that hospital. I don't think I have to mention the pain I was in for a long time...
I learned then that stones are quite common for cfers, and stones are also common after pregnancies, especially when the mom breastfeeds bc its easier to get dehydrated. They really push me to get alot of fluids now and I'm trying hard to stay on top of it.
My stone was actually too big to operate on. bc of its size, the risk of doing permanent damage to my urinary tract was too high. I had to have 6-7 lithotripsy sessions ('blasting it' with sound waves), plus a catheter for 3 months.
If stones aren't too big and in the right spot, sometimes they will take them out surgically. But the blasting is common too. Either way, its a process.
Its really important not to ignore kidney pain or blood in your urine. When I got to the ER my kidney was so swollen from the pressure of the stone it was near shutting down completely.
The other thing you can try which does help and certainly will not hurt you is drinking tons of water with lemon juice and salt in it. 8 oz of water, juice of 4-5 lemons and a bit of salt, about 6 times a day. You only do it for a day or so, but I know lots of people that have dissolved their stones that way.

I'm an expert stone maker & it's a pain! I ended up in the ER everytime because of the pain! I've had to have lithotripsy, but never surgery. The largest stone I've passed without lithotripsy is 6.4mm.

I was making several large stones a year until I found a urologist who tries to prevent stones before they form. He has been a miracle worker! I haven't had a large stone for over 1 year. I get small ones, but they are managable.

My stones are oxilate/calcium so I eat a low oxilate diet. I also take pottasium citrate 3-6 times daily with calcium. Drinking lots of water is also helpful, which I'm bad at.

My doctor checks my urine chemistry several times a year. I see him every 3 months. Sometimes I have MRI's to check for large stones still in the kidneys.

I had a lithotripsy done last year to get rid of a large stone. It actually never caused me any pain, we found it b/c of an accidental abdominal x-ray, haha. I feel really lucky to have it gone without having to deal with the pain. I didn't realize it was so common for CFers, I hope I don't get anymore!

My mother and sister both have/had bad kidney stone issues, and neither of them have CF (My mom was even placed in a tub of water one time, many years back, where they blasted the stones with an ultrasonic pulse). The one medication that finally worked in preventing them in my mother was hydrochlorothiazide, and my sister is now on that as well (With positive results so far).

so i don't have any more stones. i had another ct scan done because i never noticed passing them. well the scan came back clear, so i either didn't notice a 4mm and a 6mm stone passing or they broke up before they passed. yay, not surgery. now it's just going to get me to drink more water, hmmmmm.

Alyssa, last Thursday I had lithotripsy surgery done, and as a result I have a sever Urinary Tract Infection. I have passed little fragments of the stone, but I beleive the stone is still there. I'll know Thursday, as I go for an X-ray. But the thing is, I've tried everything, from drinking lemon juice every hour, to asparagus and coke.
