Lack of Oxygen During Sleep - A Common Occurence?

I am interested to hear from any other adults with CF who may have or suffer from lack of oxygen during sleep, causing broken sleep or headaches in the morning.

I am a 31 year old male with CF and have only recently started experiencing this.

I have only self diagnosed this myself at this early stage - the headaches I get each morning are akin to the headaches I receive after exercise which also come about as a result of lack of oxygen to the brain.

I'd be keen to hear from anyone who has any thoughts on the matter.

I would call your doc and ask them to set up an over night oximetry reading. If you are indeed desatting during your sleep using O2 would help you get better rest and sleep through the night.

I started having similar issues in late 2006. I started out just noticing that I was always tired regardless of how much sleep I actually got at night - anywhere from 5 to 14 hours I felt the same .. exhausted. Then after a few months I started getting the headaches and extreme shortness of breathe. After a few weeks of that I started getting severe anxiety and would wake up feeling like I was suffocating - and that in turn caused me to force myself to stay awake - for fear of suffocating in my sleep. That may be a bit extreme but that is how it progressed for me. By the time I actually broached the topic with my doc I practically went straight to using O2 full time. I started just at night but was on it all the time within 2-3 weeks because my body was so worn down.

If you are desatting you are hurting all the organs in your body. You are putting unneccesary strain on your heart, kidneys, liver and so on. You could be causing harm that is not necessary even if you feel "fine" other than the headaches. I felt fine or so I thought until I started using the O2 and then I realized how not fine I felt before without it.

I would definitely give your doc a call and voice these concerns at least you can get it checked and know for sure. Also the headaches I think come from CO2 retention not just lack or O2, but I may be wrong on that.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Lindsey is pretty much on the money. I would set up a sleep study to see if you are de-sating at night. It is worth a shot and if you aren't then you can look into possible other reasons for the headaches.

Good luck!

Hi there: I have only just started experiencing this myself this hospital stay . The headaches are migraines and are lots better after tylenol.

I am also finding that I feel so wiped in the morning . The doctors know about it as I have reported on rounds each morning. They haven't said anything but now I can focus on asking some questions . Reading these threads is very enlightening for me, You people are very smart and keen and you all pretty mush amaze me. It great to be a part of the forum. Most of the time I just sit and marvel over how brave you all are and down to earth. thanks for being you.

I came into the hospital last week and are doing fairly well( relative I know) for the most part tired and yet functioning on half a brain, so to speak. Luckily I have my husband and freinds and family to keep me grounded. It is amazing to me how alone one can feel even with all those we love around us. Well sorry for the long note, I just run with when my mind speaks. I hope that the headaches get better for you and your doctor is able to find some answers for you.

Blessings and Prayers are with you,

CF is an adventure.
