Lack of sleep

I just joined .. it's 4am here and I'm awake, again. Just curious if anyone out there has chronic sleep problems, and not always from the coughing...sometimes it's like my body disrupts itself as soon as I fall asleep, like it's gotten so used to waking up as soon as I relax and fall asleep that now it just does it. I can't work on 6 hours sleep, much less 3 or less, so I've called in sick, which causes more anxiety because now I'm wondering if they're wondering what the hell's wrong with me now, and if I'll do it again. Anyway, I just am glad I found this site and maybe someone has some advice on something they've tried or found to help.

If you're looking for something to help relax you to sleep, I know myself I drink a cup of chamomile tea with honey to relax enough for sleep. Sometimes though, when that doesn't work I'm up till the wee hours of the morn sometimes, so I'm not sure how much help I can be.

Something my Doc has mentioned to me is that when we sleep we breath more shallow or whatever and our body wakes itself up in an effort to remind it to get back to breathing. Convenient huh? that tends to happen more if you have low PFT's ...that would be me yes *takes a bow*

I have the same thing, Laura. My pulmonologist just scheduled me for a sleep study to find out what's going on. It could be something respirarory such as not breathing deeply enough or sleep apnea. Once I have the study and get the results hopefully they'll be able to treat it. I'm tired of being tired, too!

I have a sleep pattern similiar to my eating pattern. Every 3-4 hours I wake up (usually to pee) & then return to sleep. I use to have the inability to sleep, but fortunately that has eased. I still am tired in the am since my sleeping is disrupted a few times a night by my peeing urges etc & thats not counting when my daughter is having nightmares etc. I havent addressed it with my doctor. Mainly because I always get thru it. Should it truly start interferring with life then I guess I will mention it. Good Luck in finding a solution!

If your PFT's aren't too low, I would suggest taking some Ambien.

Sleep is so important for the body to restore itself. Studies show tha people who don't get at least 7 hours of sleep at night get sick more often.

I would definitely be proactive and get a sleep aid.

Thanks everybody, wow, fast responses on here! I've never tried a sleep aid, but I may soon get to that point. And yes, getting up every few hours to pee is annoying as hell. For me I'm not sure why it happens. I may also try Acupunture to aid sleep, as I know someone who is well trained and he has mentioned it helping insomnia. I will keep everyone posted on how that works. It's just not fun when it starts interfering with your life and work.

I would take Liz's advice, drink herbal tea...and as for the shallow breathing, taking deep breaths just before going to bed may help. It's a suggestion my wife gave to me.
As for the odd sleep pattern, it could be stress related. I was also getting so stressed from work, I couldn't sleep sound if I were up all night the day before!
I have some herbal medicine I also take on occasion to get a good nights rest. Perhaps that may help
Then, there's the old method...one sheep, two sheep. three sheep...!

I have had sleep issues for about the past 5 years.

It takes me HOURS to fall asleep, and once I finally drift off I wake up every couple of hours. Plus my husbands SEVERE snoring does not help!

I can not take sleep aids. For some reason they all make me groggy for days!

I will try Liz's idea with the tea. Any other non medication ideas?

Seana, what type of sleep aids have you taken? There are so many different kinds.

There are the type that you can buy over the counter that make EVERYONE groggy.

There are presciption as well, and those vary DRASTICALLY with side effects.

-Trazodone
-Temazapam
-Sonata
-Lunesta
-Ambien
-Ambien CR
-Deseryl

Perhaps you just haven't found the right hypnotic for you. Have you tried any of the above listed?

There really is no reason now-a-days to have a sleepless night. There are so many options out there that everyone finds something that fits them well.

I myself have had that problem since I was like... 15. I've been on Seroquel (prescription) since I was roughly 17, and it usually gets me to sleep. I don't wake up sleepy either. Not usually, anyway.
