Lactose Intolerant in Adults?

Ok, so I think I may be Lactose Intolerant. As nasty as this may or may not sound, I find that everytime I eat something with dairy in it, like a bowl of cereal, a boost shake, cream based soups, etc, I get horribly bloated and my stomach becomes distended. I'm always running to the bathroom, I have wicked stomach cramps and gas. Is Lactose Intolerance, something that can start in adulthood? Might I ask if there are any adults on here who became Lactose Intolerant as an adult, and what symptoms some of you had before diagnosis? Any information would be a big help. I'm also going to clinic next month, so I'll be able to talk to my doctor then, but in the meanwhile, I'd like some tips or info from here. Also, is it common for CFers to suffer from this? Thanks!

Hi Liz,
I had problems with lactose sensitivity, but not full blown lactose intolerance. It happened when I was on a lot of different meds and was first diagnosed with CFRD. Changing my enzymes dosage helped a LOT. It turned out that part of the problem was bowel obstruction. Things were so blocked off that my gastro-intestinal system was breaking things down where they shouldn't have been, and the process was getting slowed down and backed up...a real mess.

If you're finding that certain foods may be causing a great deal more bloating than usual, ask your doctor about getting an x-ray of your abdomen to check on things. You mentioned running to the bathroom a lot--I had that too even when I was experiencing a blockage. Apparently all that pressure was making my gut ache more but the only thing that could get through was loose, soupy stool. (Lovely, no?)

A change of enzymes, a few weeks of being careful to eat frequent small meals, and switching to lactose-free milk for awhile REALLY made a difference. I used to get SO bloated with milk, but since I love it (natural consequence of growing up on a farm) I was loathe to cut it out of my diet. Even now I prefer to cook using lactose-free milk since it tastes so sweet. EXCELLENT for use in puddings

Sorry you're having problems. I hope you feel better soon. Bloating is NO fun.

Oh, and another thing...lactose intolerance in adults is more common than people think. As mammals in the animal kingdom, our bodies were designed to really only require milk at a very young age. That's your science fun fact for the day!

I have had the same horrible problems, being hospitalized for blockage, treating myself at home with Go Lightly (very funny name!). Bloating does not describe it. It comes and goes, mostly stays with me. I have to go the the ER some times for the pain of it. So, now I am thinking maybe it could be the dairy products I eat. I have an appt. with my dr. on 2/8 and I am going to discuss this with her.
Do you take enzymes to eat? I have to take 10 pancrecarb with each meal, but I think that might have to be adjusted higher also.

Hi Liz!

That's one of the first things I discovered about myself. I couldn't eat diary unless I took store bought enzymes. And that was several years before Delta F-508 was discovered. I didn't know what CF was until 1993 when my Nephew was diagnosed.

Hopefully pharmacutical enzymes will help. Then you might be able to enjoy eating your favorite foods.

I used to have problems with lactose intolerance. I noticed any time i had a glass of milk or some cottage cheese i would have bloating and gas. Then for the sake of argument i bought some "lactaid" (over the counter tablets for lactose intolerance), and viola' it worked. I took them for a few years with every dairy food i ate and the problem was gone. Then as the years went on i started forgetting to take it or maybe ran out of it and found i didnt need it anymore. My lactose intolerance is gone.

I do take enzymes, and I know that that isn't the problem. I bought some soy milk the other day, and haven't eaten any type of dairy product for the past 2 days, and I'm feeling a ton better. I think it very well might be Lactose Intolerant. I'm going to be discussing this with my doctor when I see him next month, and see about getting tested.
