Laid up post TX

Don't worry, you won't be laying around! Like everyone said, as soon as you are off the vent, they get you sitting up pretty quickly. I was off the vent about 5 hours post tx and sitting up in a chair the next day. As soon as I was out of ICU I just kept walking around the hospital floor. That really helped me recover and I was release from the hospital after nine days. After that it was appointments and rehab every day. So you are just up and moving and busy.

Believe me, as long as your pain is under control you won't want to lay around. You are going to feel so healthy and be able to do things that you could never do! And as you build up your strength you can get to the gym, play sports, go walking around/shopping. Do whatever you want!

I felt a difference in my breathing when I first woke up but then parts of my lungs were collapsed and I was very congested. I would say about 2 months post tx (or maybe a bit sooner) I felt like a whole new person. I would say that it took me a year to feel like "myself".

Good luck!

I don't have much to add cause most of the others have answered your questions...my getting up and walking around was a little slower. They won't let you walk around in the ICU at the Cleveland Clinic, and I was in there for 5 days because they didn't have a bed for me on the transplant floor. I got up and was sitting in a chair before then though.

Even when I got to my room, they weren't going to let me walk, but after one nurse left my room, the other one was sneaky and let me walk to the bathroom (assisted). After that, I was pretty much walking all over the place.

I don't know how everyone else was cut open, but my sternum was cut (nstead of butterfly), so yes, I was very sore in the chest. I had double lung and liver though, so that may be another reason I was sore.

As for the breathing, other than being a little tight after the vent was taken out, I noticed an immediate difference. I was on like 1L of O2 and my sats were 100%.

I was out of the hospital in 12 days and home 2 1/2 weeks after that. Unlike most people post Tx, I didn't go through rehab at all. I don't know why I didn't, probably just didn't need it. I only had an FEV1 of 7% when I went into transplant, and I was still walking around, so I think I was still pretty strong going into it and maybe that's why I didn't need rehab.

Anyway, I had the transplants on January 31, 2007 and in the beginning of April, I walked a little over a mile to a park, played with my son for about an hour there, and then walked back home. Believe me, and the others, unless something doesn't go perfectly, you won't be lying around for months and months!

You guys rock! Thanks so much for that feedback. You've totally changed the way I'm looking at post TX.

I'm being evaluated at Columbia Pres. in NYC. I'm excited about the possibility of getting a second chance at life once these lungs fail. I feel so blessed. Patti---I have a 10 month old son and I can't wait to run with him (when we're both ready!). It is truly the one thing that I'm looking forward to.

Thanks everyone!

Do you live in NY? I do and I live in the Utica area.

You will be amazed at what you will be able to do with your son after you have the transplant. Brady had just turned one exactly three weeks before I got the transplants. He hadn't started walking yet, because he was premature, and when he did start walking, it was an amazing feeling to be able to be home to see it. He started walking on my b-day in 2007 and it was the most awesome birthday present ever!

I will keep you in my thoughts that you get the transplants and are able to do everything with your son that I am able to do with mine now! It's an amazing feeling!!!
