Laughing

Ok, maybe it is just me but I realized today that I can't laugh. I don't think I have been able to laugh for some time now. Whenever I start I turn bright red and start coughing and then can't breathe. My lung function is at 50% and I feel like I should be able to laugh

Is anyone else like this? Or am I just odd. I really miss being able to laugh. All I do now is smile.

Hey Sue,
Don't worry, you're not alone. My FEV1 is about 65 and when I laugh I cough like crazy!!! It really does stink but if somethnig is funny I still laugh (can't help it), i just feel bad because who every is with me will often stop laughing and look worried. But around friends and family it is okay because they know what's going on and are used to it.

I know the fact that;

laughing=coughing=feeling crappy,

but I look at it as a form of physio kinda... it always helps me cough some stuff up.

Good luck n' keep laughin,

kari

I'm at 70% lung function, and I have that problem. That's one of the worst for me, laughing turning into coughing. It made me mad when it starting happening all the time.

Sue,

You are definately not the only one...for as long as i can remember that has been the case for me...when i was 10 my cousins would make me laugh and i could not stop coughing (the choking kind). I am 26 now and at work my co-workers make me laugh all day...and i have to get up from my desk and run to the bathroom because i will cough up a lung. I run to the bathroom because at the same time i cough up a lot of sputum. My FEV1 is at about 74% so i don't think that matters. I get the same thing if i get on a roller coaster ride. When I get off the ride i can't stop coughing. Which in return has made me stop getting on some of the rides in the amusement parks.

So it is uncomfortable but you just have to laugh...

See know for some reason I can't laugh at all. Its not really that I cough. Its that I start coughing and then choking because I can't even cough. So I almost faint. so sad really.

But at least I am not only in a laughless world<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> jk

I have had this problem more recently than in the past. My lung function is at 30% though. I used to get the coughing when I laughed that bothered me on occasion but it didn't happen all the time, so I could overlook it. My problem now is that I start laughing and can't catch my breath and then I feel like I will pass out - like you mentioned Sue. I have been the same with tickling for years. I have not let people tickle me since I was in middle school because I would laugh so hard I would start to choke and felt like I was suffocating. lol I actually punched Kurt when we first started dating because he didn't believe I couldn't breathe and that was the only way he would take me seriously lol he hasn't tickled me since.

Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I still laugh on occasion but I find I try to stifle the laughing more often now than I used to and it has changed too - I don't like my laugh now it doesn't sound like me cause I had to change HOW I laugh so that I could breathe. Not really sure how I changed that but somehow I did.

I haven't REALLY laughed in years.

Editing: That sounds sooo depressing when I re-read it...you know what I mean though right...when I was younger I had this huge long rather crazy sounding laugh and once I got started I just didn't stop and then I would get to laughing at the fact I couldn't stop etc and well it's been a long time since I've laughed from my gut....probably cuz it's been a long time since any air has gotten in there! Ahhh well I'm laughing onthe inside for sure and I do a lo tof *snort* ing. It makes me think of Marry poppins.....I think I'm a blast of "ha" per Bert.

Mary Poppins Soundtrack Lyrics
- I Love To Laugh Lyrics

Uncle Albert:
I love to laugh
Loud and long and clear
I love to laugh
It's getting worse ev'ry year

The more I laugh
The more I fill with glee
And the more the glee
The more I'm a merrier me
It's embarrassing!
The more I'm a merrier me!

Mary Poppins:
Some people laugh through their noses
Sounding something like this "Mmm..."
Some people laugh through their teeth goodness sake
Hissing and fizzing like snakes

Bert:
Some laugh too fast
Some only blast - ha!
Others, they twitter like birds
Then there's the kind
What can't make up their mind

Uncle Albert:
When things strike me as funny
I can't hide it inside
And squeak - as the squeakelers do
I've got to let go with a ho-ho-ho...
And a ha-ha-ha...too!

All:
We love to laugh
Loud and long and clear
We love to laugh
So ev'rybody can hear
The more you laugh
The more you fill with glee
And the more the glee
The more we're a merrier we!
