i would love to get my almost 9 mo old baby in the water. my friends with babies her age (and younger/older) are taking swim lessons. what do folks think about pools? bacteria laden? or thoughts about the effects of breathing chlorine? in Montana, we also have commercial and primitive hot springs but those sound like bacteria breeding grounds for sure. we might just wait for summer when the rivers/lakes are warm enough but that won't be until at least July and then only good for a couple of months.

DS takes swimming lessons and plays in the water at my inlaws lake home. The lake is spring fed. We know the person who manages the public swimming pool, as well as the person from the health department who inspects pool facilities. We don't allow DS to be in hot tubs as the higher temperatures make it ideal for a huge amount of bacteria to grow in them. Last month we didn't allow DS to go with his daycare to an indoor waterpark because either they can't keep it clean or they overdo it on the chemicals. Sad little boy, but it wasn't worth the risk.

We used to have a hot tub prior to DS being born and it was a pain to keep clean. Especially if we had guests. Many a time we'd end up draining it if our nephews used it because we were pretty sure no bathroom breaks were taken.

My daughter swims in a chlorine pool three days a week and LOVES it!!! We were told that the only thing to avoid is Hot Tubs, otherwise swimming is a go. The sport of swimming is so great for lung and breath strength. One of the adult patients on this board was a competitive swimmer in college, she is a great athlete and in great shape. Everything in life has a risk benefit ratio...in this case you take the chance of dealing with chlorine or bugs that exist in any water sources for the benefit of strong lungs. You should talk to your doctor and make sure they feel that the risk benefit is in your favor.

The only water contact we avoid for Emily is hot tubs... and the pond on our property and others like it. But then again, I don't want ANY of my kids in water like that- it's stagnant and I'm sure loaded with nasty stuff! Spring-fed lakes, saltwater, and well-maintained pools are all a go for us.

Joanna takes swimming lessons since she was 9 months. In an indoor public pool. The water is with chloride. She loves it/ I just keep her on my hand in the showers and use my own soap. After swimming I throw the tissuses straight into the washing machine. We also swim in lakes - but our lakes freeze over in winter - not to the bottom - but still the water is rather cold all year round. The lake area we gop is considered the cleanest in Europe though.
Joanna loves it and learned to control her breath better then kids her own age who do not attend such lessons.
I also avoid hot tubs.

I grew up on a lake and I swam my whole life. I don't think there's any problems with lakes and/or chlorinated pools. Just be cautious of hot tubs, as they breed a lot of bacteria. Swimming is GREAT for the lungs!
