Left over goo

So, My daughter has had an exacerbation, treated her with steroids and anti's(for over a month)..Her follow-up PFT's are better but still about 6% less than in December when they were at her all time best. She has a bit of mucus left(she's ALOT better) but I am afraid with the next cold/resp thing we'll be starting all over again. Any advice about helping getting rid of the residual goo from an exacerbation....We do pulmozyme, Hypersal, pulmicort, albuterol, Vest. I feel like she just needs to run around. I do feel her body needs a rest from antibiotics/steroids.

What helps you? Exersize? Her last culture was actually normal flora which seems a little wierd.....2 weeks earlier it was MRSA which both the doc and I agree likely did not show up on her last culture.

Unfortunately, the goo doesn't go away. But, I do think exercise is your best bet. Its the only thing that really has any noticeable difference for me.

I'm not sure how old your daughter is but, if she can swallow pills and has a good water intake ask the doctor about using Mucinex. My doctor prescribed it to me that way my insurance will pay for it. I find it really helps with getting mucus loose and out of the smaller airways. Makes everything easier to get out.

For me, exercise is the key. Another thing to consider is that this might be her new baseline, not that I wouldn't fight to change that, but sometimes that's the nature of the beast.

My daughter is 9. She drinks tons of fluids, she has not been exercizing as much as she usually does cause the antibiotics and steroids make her feel yucky, but now she's off them and I want to her get rid of that left over gunk. It's not alot just she usually does not have it. She does soccer , yesterday she did 125 jumping jacks! Guess we'll start jumping again. Her doc said there was not alot you could do about the residual stuff.

Ed,

My daughter loves to sing. She had been taking voice lessons then stopped(her "teacher" is a young music major in college). We plan on doing voice lessons again during her summer break. When we drive to her doctor's appointment it takes an hour and half, she usually is singing songs on the radio; coughing in between<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I also plan on signing my daughter up for softball in the spring.

My advice coming from a parent of a 15 year old.
Keep doing what your doing (treatments, vest etc.) but excercise really does help open the bronchial airways. When it gets warmer or if you can take her to a heated pool, the holding of the breath and allowing her to swim really does work great. One of the best excercises for CFers. My son gets great benefit. During the winter months is a struggle for us, because all he wants to do is lay around and play video games. Heck we even have to bargain and allow him to do the treatments while he plays the video games lol.
My son also cultures MRSA.
Also, I agree with the above poster, if your daughter is old enough Mucinex can help thin the mucous even further than the Pulmozyme, but those pills are large just to warn you.

We recently did 3 weeks in hospital for my daughters first MRSA infection. I have been anti hospital until now, scared of catching MrSA, but once she cultured it anyway.... oh well I guess. Our hospital gave her an exercise bike in her room. Great idea. Next time I will ask if she can bring her little trampoline. Otherwise they sit in isolation, all the treatments in the world are nothing without exercise, right?

Get her up & and get her active. encurage her to sing if she doesn't, I'm horrid but something about attempting the harmonics of notes causes the "slime" to break up.
