Length/regularity of cycles

Hi everyone,

I was under the impression that CF women have problems with their menses (i.e. starting periods later due to small size, regularity, etc). Or am I not correct?

I didn't start menstruating until I was 16, and I was also late to develop. I seem to have pretty regular cycles now; although, sometimes they're not super regular. I cannot pinpoint the day that I will start my period and I am not every "28 days". I am more like 40-45 days.

Is there anyone out there who is like that? Did you get pregnant successfully?

It seems like there are a lot of women on here who need fertility treatments and I'm wondering why that is. I also know that the increased cervical mucus might be a problem, right?

My CF doctor told me that he would not want me taking any fertility drugs, as the hormones can cause problems in CFers. Has anyone else heard of that? Seems like a lot of you guys on here have tried fertility drugs.

Thanks!

Many women with CF ovulate irregularly, remember that menses is not necessarily an indicator of ovulation. In addition to the irregular ovulation there is the increased cervical mucous making conception difficult becuase it puts up a 'roadblock' for the sperm.

I would like to see what evidence there is (I am guessing none) that says fertility drugs cause problems in CF. To my knowledge there is no such evidence nor to the knowledge of my reproductive endocrinologist or my CF docs. This is the first I have ehard of it. Should you do IVF they need ot make sure they dont hyperstim you as that can cause problems wth the lugns in severe cases or in a milder case can cause you not to want to eat like what I had but I can tthink of anythign else.

Leah-very few RE's will do an unmedicated IUI (where they transfer the sperm into your cervix to bypass its journey). Most doctors always use either clomid or femara to get a bettter quality egg and an extra egg or two and use a HCG trigger to know what day is best to do the IUI.

I got my period at 13 and it has always been regular. I got pregnant with my son easily and with no fertility drugs. We TTC ed for our 2nd for a year before turning to clomid and IUI - though I suspect we would have concieved without, I was antsy to get the show on the road and have an OBGYN in the family, so it was an easy decision. Plus we hypothesized that it was possible in the 7 years between kids that my cervical mucous had thickened enough to inhibit easy conception. I charted during my TTC phase and I do ovulate every month.

I don't know why Cfers would have problems with hormones used for ovulation - I'd ask what research backs that up? it seems that CF moms are still new enough that a lot of docs really don't know what they are dealing with and want to err eveything on the side of caution (sometimes extreme caution). But as you'll see, most of us have had very easy, uncomplicated pregnancies and healthy babies.
