light-headedness during coughing

I am on my usual off-tobramycin period, and I have been having a terrible time with dizziness during coughing. When I am on tobramycin (w/eFlow) I feel terrific and cough very little, mostly only during vesting. But on the off-period, I definitely have an increased cough and usually cough a lot harder. But this particular time, I am getting super dizzy during coughing spells. It's almost like I'm afraid to cough for the fear I may pass out (I haven't, but I feel very faint at moments). Has this ever happened to anyone before?

I have experienced light-headedness in the past from hard coughing, but this week it just feels a little bit more present. Should I be worried? Has anyone ever passed out from coughing? I'm wondering why this is happening and what I should do.

Thanks

Increased interthoracic pressure can compress baroreceptors in the larger vessels and also the vagus nerve. It can lead to dizziness, as it drops your blood pressure and heart rate. You can pass out if it gets bad enough.

Unfortunately getting a CF doc to prescribe a cough suppressant is like squeezing blood from a turnip. I recently had an annoying allergy hack (non-productive) and they wouldn't even consider an suppressant. Actually these days, if it's not an antibiotic, pulmozyme, enzymes or HTS, they won't Rx much of anything. It's really annoying because you need to have several doctors, even though most of my other complaints are loosely related to CF.

Maybe another inhaled RX while on your off months of TOBI would help you with the cough. That is what happen to me. I could not get through my off TOBI months so I started Colistin. LOVE coli it works great on me. If you cough really hard I can see getting dizzy would be common. I cough really hard and sometimes I see stars but not often. I would mention it doc and see what they say. Sit down when when you cough, maybe that will help. Good luck and hope you feel better and get some resolutions.
Thanks guys. I'm back on my Tobra and I am already feeling better. I just can't believe how different I feel when I'm off of it. I am actually on a non-traditional cycle of 3 weeks on/1 week off, but that 1 week can be brutal! I cannot take Colistin due to severe bronchospasm issues with it, so that's out for me. My other option would be Cayston alternating with Tobra, but I'm a little hesistant, since Cayston is sort of my back-up drug right now.

I often have really bad coughing fits that make me super light-headed and leave me seeing lots of purple spots and/or stars for a bit. I usually try to sit down or grab a chair or something nearby to steady me a little, and then take a few deep breaths once the fit is over. I also find it helpful to drink a few swallows of water.

I wouldn't recommend using a suppressant though, unless it was a very non-productive cough.

something that used to help me was going to a very cool room. Especially if I woke up coughing.
