Liver Trouble Anyone?

I was fortunate enough that I didn't really have a lot of side effects from my liver disease. The main one was the enlarged varices and spleen...and elevated numbers. I don't remember any swelling at all...but I did have one friend who had swelling from liver troubles...and also from her kidneys. She coudln't get listed for lungs and liver, and had a lung transplant. Unfortunately, her liver was not strong enough for all of the new meds she was on post tx, and she passed 2 months after her transplant.

To all who responded:

I told you all I would update you on my liver once I knew anything. So far, so good! Every test has come back normal. The only test I have left is the endoscopy and ph cap placement--to check for severe acid reflux/varices, etc. While I am relieved nothing life-threatening has been revealed I (and my doctors too)wonder why I have so much leg edema, etc.??... Thanks again, guys.

I have biliary cirrhosis since my late 20's (I turn fourty next month)due to CF. It started out with slight elevated liver enzymes with blood tests. I was put on ursodiol to help dissolve the gallstones that were causing cholestasis. Over a next few years my ALT/AST an bilirubin levels continue slowly rise until I was admitted into the hospital
because of jaundice. My Hepatologist told me bilirubin is the true indicator of how well the liver is functioning. Liver disease mainly impairs the secretion of conjugated bilirubin into bile and causes jaundice. If you elevated ALT/AST levels you should keep an eye out for these Symptoms Yellow of the skin an eyes, dark color urine, Itching skin.

At the time of my hospitalization my ALT/AST levels (400 range) and bilirubin in my body (4.0 range). I was placed on a liver transplant list and rushed into surgy within one day time frame to remove the gallstones that were blocking my bile ducts. I was put a t-tube for the next 9 month so, provide easy access to remove more stone that they were unable to be removed during the original surgery. I still have elevated liver enzymes but, not at the levels at the time of my surgy (Levels drop to (175 ALT/AST range) (bilirubin 1.2 range).

Thought I would share my story with you... and I wish you well

wow. what a tremendous story. thank you for the insight and personal time you took to share this with me. i read this and can't help but think how amazing you are to have dealt with all of this and then share it with me, a total stranger. as the years pass by and my chances of liver problems increase i will remember your story and remind myself to push the docs/care team in the event that even the smallest of things seems off. thank you for this. take care and be well.
