Long-term Augmentin use

My son's CF Dr. tells us to give him augmentin whenever he has a cold that turns into a cough. But his colds last forever and in May he was on augmentin for the entire month. But then a couple days after we stopped it, he started coughing more. It sounds more like inflammation than mucus so we're giving him a week off to see how it goes.

Meanwhile, my question for the group is about your experience with kids being on augmentin for long periods of time: do many of you do this? has anyone switched to something else that seems more effective?

DS was put on it for a month when his doctor wanted to get rid of his nasty boogery nose once and for all. Had nasty diaper issues and was VERY relieved when the symptoms alleviated and the month was over. More recently he's been put on Cipro when he's gotten a cough.

We get nervous anytime Emily has to be on any oral antibiotic for an extended period (more than a 10 day course). She has had a few bouts of c.diff which results from the antibiotic killing off t he good bacteria in the stomach and letting the bad bacteria grow. The result is diarrhea, vomiting, achy...generally feeling terrible for quite a while. C.diff has put her in the hospital.

Augmentin hasn't seemed to be one of the oral's that does it to her, unfortunatley, she also doesn't respond to it terribly well. She usually needs something stronger. We've had success with omniceft (but that's also what led to c.diff, on two occasions - can't win!)

Please make sure that whenever an oral antibiotic is given for an extended period that you are replenshing the stomach's natrual bacteria with a pro-biotic or lots and lots of yogurt and other culture containing products.
