lung function

Ok so I have a few questions. My lung capacity is not good at most 40% last time I saw a pulm dr. and she was amased it was that good. I am not a CF'er but both of my kids are. I can't do anything without having a cough fit of some kind. Walking, stairs, sex, talking to much some times I pass out from coughing. Will my lung problems make my boys worse? I've never asked the dr cause it sounds kind of stupid. Also do any of you have those little hand held peak flow meters? I can get it to go to 100 and I taught my 2yr old how to do it and he can get it to 80. Does anyone now the correlation between those and the machines they use to test pft at hospital?

If you have low peak flows at home you will have low flows at the lab. As for your lung function and your children..the correlation can only be made if your lung condition is contagious or heredity. If you don't mind, what condition do you have?

Asthma chronic bronchitis brochiectasis but they get worse when my stomach problems or allergies are bad. So that means if my peak flow is lower on the one I do at home it's gonna be lower at the dr when we do my pft.

Peak flows are used to trend expiratory flow rates while you are at home so doc's will know when intervention is needed. But yes, if there is a decrease in your flows at home there will be a correlation in PFT lab. When were you diagnosed with bronchiectasis? I have never seen any specific studies but there may be a potential for cross contamination with your bacteria as it relates to your bronchiectasis and your kids. You are pretty young to have low PFT's with asthma and bronchiectasis, have you ever been tested for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency? I am taking for granted you have also been tested for CF as well.

Diagnosed with it around 17 it's been a long time. Never been tested for either other things but I have gotting pretty big since I had kids because of all the insulin. Before I was pregnant I was 110lbs and always had to take lots of vitamins. What is Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency?

I didn't find out that I had CF until I was 32. Diagnosed with asthma all my life. Then I had a child with CF and decided to get tested myself at 32.

a genetic disorder that causes emphysema, you should be tested for both diseases.

keep in mind that the defiency is not a common disorder. Emphysema is normally caused by smoking or occupational exposure. But even if you smoke and work in the coal mines your lung functions wouldn't be in the 40's until you are well over 40 years old.

Yes - I have been very thin all my life. But, I have a friend with CF and she is a little on the heavy side (and has been all her life). She has different mutations than I do - so she is pancreatic sufficient and I am not.

Sorry everyone I ment to say I thought all people with CF are skinny. I didn't know I said it the other way around till I came on here today. Hope that didn't sound bad. I tend to think of it more that way because my boys have such a bad time with weight.
