Lung Lavage

I have also heard that doing a lung lavage can be more damaging than helpful. They used to "wash" the lungs in the past as part of the bronchs. I think it would be a bad idea because it would just expose more areas to infection. I've also read in The Stones Applaud about a lady with CF's experience as a child getting a lavage and how horrendous it was.

I had a full lung luvage done in oct 2008 and it was the worst experience of mine and my families life. I was on the ventilator for days following the invasive procedure and was in the ICU for weeks after it took me about 8-9 months for fully recoop from it. They only got to do one lung because after putting in so much saline they said they had put in overall 35liters of saline and washed the lung out but when that still wasn't enough there was still mucous left they had to stop because I was responding badly. My lung didn't dry out for 8 days which was supposed to happen in minutes. To make a LONG story short I DO NOT recommend this procedure to ANY CF patient. It was a very traumatic experience that i would not want to relive. All because i thought hey if we could just vacuum this junk out i'd be great! Well that wasn't the case.

i guess everyones experience is different...my daughter had her lavage and showed absolultly no pain or problems since then. she was released from the hospital 2 days later on iv antibiotics...of course the mucus starts growing back immediatley, but she had no bad side effects from the lavage.

Actually, I've had it done quite a lot, and it makes me feel better, even though only temporarily. The procedure isn't exactly fun, but I don't think it's that big a deal either. I'd rather go through that than have a PICC line placed.

Obviously, like anything else with cf, different people handle it differently. I've never had any major issues resulting.
