MAC

Hi, everyone.

I have MAC and have shown it now in my past 6 cultures. I am also experiencing a severe decrease in pft numbers so we're looking at what the cause may be.

My new doc at this center said they only treat MAC if I have a skin rash. Has anyone heard of this?

She also said they only treat MAC if you show it in cultures for like over a year and if you do consecutive cultures on different days (i.e. Tues, Weds., Thurs.) and it shows up. If you do it only on say a Tuesday and that is the only day that week, it doesn't matter if it shows. It needs to be day to day consecutively. I've never heard of that either. Has anyone heard this?

Thanks,

I dont believe this to be true. I know they dont always jump on it unless it is interfering with your actual health like a decrease in lung function.

MAC is nothing to mess with & if you are showing it in enough cultures (nevermind 6 (SIX) cultures tho I am not sure what the normal "magic" number is) then I think it is neglegent for the doctor not to treat it......

There are enough people who culture this to get an answer!

thanks....

yeah, i'm hoping more MAC folks will come on to talk about their experiences.

i got a second opinion today from another accredited clinic and they said after culturing MAC 3 times and a decrease in lung function, without cause to think its an exacerbation, that is criteria for treating it. anyone have any experience with this??

thanks...
