My three year old constantly cultures Staph A and has horrible sinus infections as a result. Zithromax usually clears them up. I wanted to do Zithromax three days a week but our Center says no b/c he has never cultured Pseudomonas.

We went for a second opinion and he also thought Zithromax as maintenance was the best for our son. Our center holds the belief that killing the Staph allows for Pseudomonas. I've heard that before but I believe there has been no relaible research to back that up. Is anyone on Zithromax three times a week and has never cultured Pseudomonas? I have no idea what it the best for him at this point.

I'm on it for Staph every day to get rid of the Staph, partway into a 3 month dose. I just finished up 18 mos of 3 other concurrent antibiotics for MAC (which I successfully got rid of). I've never tested + for PA. Now this is just my personal opinion, but I'd think that 3/week is just asking for MRSA. You can't do on/off again without risking that unless the on is sufficient duration to nuke the infection rather than helping with natural + selection of the mutated varieties (MRSA).

I've been on 3000mg (later 2000mg) of Flucloxacillin every day to treat the staph that I had in my lungs. I've been on it since as long as I can remember and never cultured it in my lungs anymore. I stopped this antibiotic when I had my transplant. So I must have been on it for about 18 years I think. This antibiotic is used a lot in my country and also in the UK. I have never heard it being used on this boards though, so not sure about the US.

We don't have a lot of MRSA here too...

I have read here that some people don't treat Staph to completely get rid of it cause they believe that it keeps Pseudo away. I have never heard my doctor about it.
I've always had a lot of Pseudo. I don't know if that is because I didn't have Staph. I know people who have a lot of both too.

I've cultured PA for several years and was placed on the Zithromax MWF schedule about 6 years ago I think. I still culture PA and staph quite often. I've been told that if you stop the zithromax, you may allow another germ to invade. I guess that happens with a few different drugs. I've never really seen an improvement in anything since I started Zithro so I don't even know if it does anything for me. :/
