Mammograms & Ports

Today I am scheduled for my first mammogram of my life. It being a new thing for me, I admit that I get a bit of anxiety. I know the general idea & I know I have endured worse physical things, but its still new/change & for those who know me......I dont like that!

So my brain fast forwards to what/when/if I get a port. If I get one close to, in, under my breast as some woman do would this be an issue for future mammograms?

I realize its not like an MRI as far as metal, but dang...they have to quish you & if there is something there that isnt meant to be squished then what?

Anyone have thoughts or experiences with this issue??

Hi Mel!

I've had 2 Mammograms and haven't had any problems with my port. I tell the person doing it about it and she is careful when squeezing/smashing what little "boobs" i do have. My port is on my left side right above the what little boob i have. I won't lie to you, my first mammogram was very painful...my second one was a breeze! I have started getting them already due to my mom's history of breast cancer. Let me know how it goes!

Caren 36 w/CF and other things!

I had one mammogram when I had my port (I know....why did I have a mammogram when I am not even 30). Well, it was routine for the transplant evaluation and I had to have it done. I told the tech that I had a port and she just worked around it. It was kind of hard to do it but she did. Mine was in my chest under my collar bone...I would imagine that it would be harder to avoid it if it was under the breast.

Anyway, if it is impossible to do the mammo with the port, then there is always ultrasound and I have actually heard that those can show more things than mammos.
