massage therapy and CF

I love massage it is my absolute favorite thing. I get very tense mid/upper back (around lungs) muscles that dont actually hurt where they are but where they attach which is all around the shoulders and neck.

I am seeing a new chiropractor with a masseus and we are just this week discussing whether my lung issues can be related to my back muscle issues as they say I am one of the worst cases they have seen in a while (for a certain area of my muscles no tthe entire back) for muscle tightness. I was previously going to school for chiropractic and alot of this makes sense I am very interested in it. Also peopel with bad asthma and lung issues usually do not take deep breaths expanding thei rrib cage and chest properly which can also allow muscles to stay and get tight.

During pregnancy I had a deep tissue massage every week and it is the only time I did not have problems. I have also noticed the same muscles that are chronically tight with me really really get sore right before I get sick, I can always tell it is coming before the doctors can tell.

I use massage therapy alot. In the hospital its more for muscular problems in my back which restrict my airways. At home my hubby massages my back also, but he really concentrates on the one area and I cough up a ton of stuff. Two nights ago I coughed up stuff that just wouldnt move. Its a terrific tool for me!

I also get very tight in my upper back, and find that massage helps loosen things up. I am amazed at how much stuff I cough up after a good massage. I think the standard treatment should be massage, then the vest!!! Wonder if I could get my insurance to pay for that every day!!

hello nance.

if i could afford it, i would get massages once or twice a month. as it is, it's kind of sporadic like when i have the extra cash or just feel out of balance. i have found it really helps my back and neck, shoulders especially.

I would get acupressure massages up and down the spine (spinal flush) from a massage therapist.

I now practice acupressure (touch for health) sedating and strengthening my acupuncture points. I learned how to do this from the book "Energy Medicine" by Donna Eden and David Feinstein.

Tonight I worked on my small intestine points and I coughed up some mucus. I am not sure if it came from my sinuses or chest, it was so fast.

I trace my meridians which is sort of like a massage and work on my spleen points daily.

I have a massage chair and table. Sometimes I drain my sinuses laying down for one hour or more on the table.
Thankfully, my husband knows how to give a professional massage when I need it.

I also practice the Dorn Method. This is a very interesting website to check out if you are a massage therapist. http://www.dorn-method.com/

I have his book (hard cover) e-book, DVD and posters. You will learn so much. Many of the recommendations of what NOT to do I was doing and that could be why I had back pain. I love the exercise he has for against the wall. That works on the bladder meridian. I am sure you know that the bladder meridian is connected to all the meridians in the body. The exercise relaxes all the muscles associated with the spine. Sort of like a self spinal flush. He talks about correcting scolosis. I have a slight problem with that and my bra strap no longer falls off my shoulder.

hope this helps

I know of some adults with CF who also use massage therapy and say that it is really helps them.

As for expense, try a chiropractic college. We have one here locally who has great rates on massage therapy. The one here in our area does children at no cost if a parent is a 'regular', so I am considering doing this for myself and my two girls
