Mealtimes at school

Our school district is switching to all day kindergarten this year, which means instead of going from 11:30 to 2:15, DS will be attending from 8:15 to 2:20.

Currently I feed him a glass of Carnation instant breakfast right away in the morning after his CPT at about 6:45. He usually sleeps thru it -- I use a glass with a straw. Then at 8 he gets breakfast with his friends at preschool/daycare and at 11:30 he gets lunch, snack at 2:30... I give him a snack after work at 5:15, then he has supper after his vest at about 6:30 or 7, sometimes a bedtime snack.

We struggle constantly with meals -- hence his morning sleep-feed. He just doesn't care about eating. The preschool works with him to get him to eat lunch -- bribery, sneaking in extra dessert, calories. So with school, I don't imagine someone is going to be sitting there coaxing him to eat -- there are over 500 kindergarteners in our school district...

Any suggestions? Hope he decides to suddenly eat? As for succumbing to peer pressure, as my annoying MIL thinks he'll do -- doubt that will happen as he's already in a group environment during lunch and snacks.

Liza I had told the school about Austin needing the extra calories. I was allowed to bring in extra foods for him and they allowed him to eat or drink.

We also arranged a snack time for him since his class ate lunch at 10:45 or 11:00 depending on the day. So we had arranged a snack for him at 1:00 everyday. I provided the snacks and he would just go to the nurses station and get it and bring it back to class. It was pretty amazing that the other children didn't even get upset.

Actually at time the other kids would tell Austin it was his snack time. The kids just accepted it. there wer times that when the class was having some sort of party that he would just have snacks with them.

Just talk to your school. I am sure they would be willing to help out. it was good at Austins school that the principal's daughter was best friends with a girl that had CF too so he understood.

Good Luck!

I am an elementary school teacher. I know that if you ask the teacher to help with snacks during the day they will. If I were you I would talk to the principal because there are some teachers that will be better then others with regards to being more helpful. I am on leave since Ben's diagnosis but even when I go back and he is old enough to attend school I plan on requesting certain teachers. If you are open with the principal about the situation they should help with placement of good teachers that will help coax him to eat extra during the day. (Maybe special reward snacks for when he does something awesome in class!) I have had students in the past with many food issues and have even had parents send special items in. I hope this helps ease your worry!

My girls plan is for them to have access to snacks during the day as needed (in the am and/or pm). I do send snacks to school for them in their backpacks. Their plans state that they can go the the office to eat their snacks, so they are not embarressed,or feel bad, to eat in front of their classmates. But both girls teachers decided to just allow all the kids to bring snacks. It's a long day for kids with our without CF, and they can just concentrate better when they don't have growling bellies

As for lunches, Kayla brings her lunch every day, so I know pretty much what she is eating and the amount of calories she is taking in. I think she only bought lunch 4 times last year. The year before, she would sometimes order two entrees on days that they made something that she really liked Hannah eats her school bought lunch almost every day, and if she isn't crazy about it, she has her snack to munch on a little later.

As soon as I pick them up from school, we have to get food! They are starving and if they don't get something to eat immediately, it's not a pretty sight
