Medical Personal who fail to Follow Protocols

My "story" happened this year. Little background, I am a 23 male CFer, I was having a lump caused by medicine removed from my breast. (Yeah I know, sounds weird, but what can you do?) Purely a routine 30 minute procedure go home an hour after its done. Well I wake up in the ICU, hooked up to all the bells and whistles, and am wondering what happened. About this time my parents came in, and filled me in best they could.(Blood was sucked into my air tube during surgery and everyone freaked out) In comes the nursing staff to give me my pills. Now keep in mind I left that morning planning on being home in a couple hours so I was without a med list, meds other than my Ultrase, and whatnot. I beg for water, and I am brought a cup of ice and a "handfull" of Ultrase20. I say what is this for, talking about the pills. "Oh they are to make you feel better, you need to take 5." NO WAY, those are my digestion pills. (In a put out voice) You have been through alot and don't realize what this is, just take it so I can write it down. I informed her that I was not about to ingest those pills unless I was brought food, so she stormed off. Good grief. Fast forward to the next day. I was taken such poor care of my kidneys began to shut down and I started coughing up blood also. Finally I get flown to my regular hospital, which is 2 hours away, and that was the beginning of a 3 week stay, which was a whole other nightmare within itself. Here's a hint, reg Doc was on vacation the entire time and I got a brand new, chip-on-the-shoulder doctor fresh out of med school.

This is a great topic! Well, this happened to me a long time ago, probably when I was around 14 or so. Anyway, I had hurt my ankle (don't remember how) and my parents took me to an emergicare type place. I had to give my medical history of course, and I had this Indian doctor. When I got to the part about the CF, this woman looked at me like I was crazy. She said "who told you that?" I said I was diagnosed when I was 17 months old. She said I was wrong because only males get CF. I told her she was crazy, she kept arguing with me and pretty soon I was yelling at her. I told my parents we were leaving, that I didn't want to do anything that this woman told me to do. I mean how crazy is that - only boys get CF! How did she even graduate from medical school? It's not like it's soom rare disease no one has ever heard of!Martha 29, CF

All of these stories are real and I am sure there are many of you who have had similar experiences too. We all need to do something and speak up each time. Perhaps we can either tell them nicely to get lost or we will report them if they do something to mess up. Finding the right words to say might help and then again might hurt. I am still confused as to what to do but I guess always complaining behind their backs is a start. I am going to use that I am a medical reporter and writer next time I encounter a newbie.I hope many others continue to share their stories and insights. This is an extremely important topic that should not be brushed over lightly.
