Medical transcription schooling?

I've been "retired" for over 4 years now and it's killing me...I need something to do. I was thinking of going to school, but I don't know what for.

What suggestions do you have? I'm looking for the perfect job - something I can do from my home office. That may mean working in a real office temporarily, it may not.

Has anyone taken medical transcription? How difficult is it? How long is schooling? Do you have to work in an office afterwards to build a network?

You can post here, or IM me. Tell me all you know about it!
Thanks!!!!

Hey Sally! I don't know much about medical trans. but here goes. You can take classes online for the degree, never have to set foot in a classroom. Once you are finished with school you can get a job working from home. I don't think you have to work in an office at all, but I don't know how hard it is to get started in the field. Trying surfing the net for info. , i'm sure there is plenty out there. Good luck!!! I am a full time college student at 35 years old with 3 kids, if I can do it anyone can.

I am an RHIT (Registered Health Information Technologist) But I orginally went in for the one year transcription program. You can earn a certificate in this. I did not care for it much but kudos to anyone who is a great typist . You have to love to be by yourself and be an incredibly fast and accurate typist to make any money at it. There are many companies that you can join that offer at home transcription services and you can join one of those. I am the Medical Records Director where I work and I have had many transcriptionist work for me and some of them did do some work at home but they were well-known in this industry. PS. You have to LOVE transcribing to be successful at it. Hope this was helpful......JC

thank you to both of you.

Jennifer, can you explain further? You said you didn't care for it , why?
I don't mind being alone, I don't mind typing. Are you saying it's just tedious work?
Can you give me an "estimate" on what kind of money it makes? I'm more looking to fill my time,
yet I don't want it to be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth...so I'm just looking for an 'estimate"

If you like working on a computer how about a CAD draftsman. You could learn autocad in a few classes and contract with local engineering or architectural firms. Easy enough to work from home doing that.

Hi Sally -

I did medical transcription for 20 years before my "retirement" 4 or 5 years ago. I did various positions, some clinic work, mostly hospital work. In my last job before retirement I worked out of my home for the hospital I worked for. I had worked for a service before but preferred being an employee of a hospital versus working for a service who contracts to hospitals and clinics. It is a mentally demanding job, especially hospital work.

I did a two year medical transcription course at a junior college but I know there are Vo-Tech courses that only require 6-9 months of school. My experience has been that for the hospital work you need to work "in-house" for 3-4 months before they send you home. I'm not sure if the on-line transcription courses are worth it or not, hopefully somebody can help you with that. All in all my experience in transcription was great but it just got to be too much for me, even being able to work out of my home and not having a commute, being able to do treatments as needed, etc. If you think of any questions I haven't answered please feel free to ask!
