Mic-key Gtube

Hi all!

Until recently I had been a healthy' CF patient. In june I took a few trips and didn't eat well, and worked my *** off! haha Anyway, in the beginning of June I weighed 105lbs. Everything was going up and going pretty good. Now, in the beginning of September, I'm way back down to 95 lbs. I'm not gaining anything, even though I eat like a horse! So the Gtube has come into conversation.

I am all for it, as it would take some of the pressure off of me. I understand that I will still have to eat healthily during the day, but I will be getting more calories at night.

The type of tube they're talking about is the Mic-key. I don't know a lot about the Bard, but they didnt ask what one i wanted, so it's the Mickey that im getting.

Anyway, can some of you share your experience with the mickey, and what the second procedure was like for you [where they take the tube out and put the button in]?
I would sure apreciate it!

My boys have a Bard style button. They are like a beach ball snap. I posted pictures once before, if you'd like to see it, let me know. There are a few differences. The Mic-Key is removable so if it breaks it can be fixed quickly.

Before the Mic-key is put in, they put in a tube (peg) to keep the hole open while its healing (6 weeks I think). It is awkward but can usually be kept flat by wrapping it. After the hole heals, they just slide out the tube and slide in the button.

The Bard button is placed all at once during surgery. The Bard is all one piece. The button itself is very flat (flatter than a mic-key).
Another good thing about the Mic-key is that the extension tube locks into place so there is less chace of leakage at night.

We don't have experience with the Mic-key but you can ask me anything you can think of.

My oldest son is 8 and has had his g button for abotu 2 years. He originally got the bard but then after a while they switched it to he Mini so we could switch it out at home by ourselves.

The Mini is like the Mickey as far as it locks but it is small and not as bulky as the Mickey. We can change the Mini out at home and we do about every 2.5-3 months. It took about 6-8 months to get the granulation tissue around the site taken care of but it is now doing just fine.

I believe he got his on a Tuesday and was home on Friday. He plays soccer and is just as active as any other 8 year old boy. Hope this helps.

Thanks for replying! My surgery is scheduled on Monday...I can't wait! Was there a lot of pain for your boys after the surgery? How long did it take for them to resume 'normal' activity?

Thanks again! I honestly can't wait to get mine!!
