Mid-Cycle Spotting

Has anyone else experience mid-cycle spotting?

I have this basically every month. My husband and I are about 5 months into TTC. I can not find much info online relative to mid-cycle spotting and if it potentially relates to hormone levels, etc. This month was my first month really tracking/TTC using fertilityfriend; OPK, BBT, etc. I am usually on apprx 30 to 31 day cycles. I had clear ovulation on CD23 this month which pending whether or not I am pregant, gives me about a 10 day luteal phase.

I seem to have spotting more often than not, and I was curious to see if anyone could shed any light on this for me?

Thanks -Christina

I think you need to have your progesterone checked. Spotting is usually a sign of it. I tend to spot at times too but not as regularly as you are. Also, you are ovulating late. Ovulation past CD20 isn't good. A 10 day luteal phase isn't too good either. Doctors like to see 12-14 days. With a 10-day luteal phase, you are right on the edge.

I would strongly suggested getting some bloodwork. Insurance pays for it, and a regular GYN doctor can order it for you. You have been trying for 5 months so your hormone levels should be true now. It's not like you came off the pill 1-2 months ago...

I have never heard that it is bad to ovulate after CD 20, interesting. I have heard a 10 day luteal phase isn't good, because it doesn't give you enough time for implantation to occur. Sometimes taking a vitamin B-6 supplement along with your prenatal vitamin can help with a short luteal phase.

When does your mid-cycle spotting occur? If it's right around the time of ovulation, it could just be ovulation spotting - some women experience this because the egg can cause some minor bleeding when it bursts out of the ovary.

But, it sounds like you are having A LOT of spotting by your statement "I seem to have spotting more often than not" - I would definitely call your OB/GYN about this.

Kristen,

Ovulation after Day 20 is usually questionable because it indicated that the egg is 'old' and possibly not capable of being fertilized even if sperm is present. Again, it usually signals poor egg quality. This is also seen greatly in women entering menopause.

Many women in that situation are placed on Clomid to induce ovulation before Day 20. Typically, ovulation between Days 14-16 are what doctors want to see. At Day 18-19, I just make it, and I will be placed on Clomid because of it!!!

Bloodwork on Cycle Day 3 and Cycle Day 23-25 is what I would highly recommend. If everything checks out okay, then you're alright. Some people do ovulate late. However if something is off, you would be placed on Clomid to see if it fixes the problem. If Clomid fails, then doctors move to injectables which are expensive. Clomid is under $20.00 a month which is doable for most.
