I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at a very young age. I was very blessed to grow up as healthy as I am now but my Cystic Fibrosis does affect my one MAJOR goal in life...to join the military and defend my country. I have wanted to join since I was 10 or so and tried to get information since the age of 15. Sadly, they said I couldn't and that I couldn't even get a waiver to be enlisted. My dreams were shattered by this disappointing news. I was just wondering if anyone had any information they could share with me about joining, I would be so grateful! I am 19 so I am at the age to join. Thank You!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My brother also wanted to join the military, but he was told the same thing as you. My aunt who's in the Army, tried to see about him getting a medical waiver, but they said no.

Besides the cool toys, why the hell'd you wanna join the military?

Well, unless you do not disclose you have CF i think it would be impossible. (possibly lack of medicine when sent out, crappy food, flying or operating at altitude (fe. Afghanistan is hugely elevated with peaks of over 6km/4 miles not uncommon), all sorts of things. Let alone make it through the tests, are you really That healthy?) Luckily you can get your hands on the toys if you go the technical/engineering route instead and look for work in military industries.

But ofcourse, as there's no special demands to become a Hippie, you could do that instead. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Not to mention basic training would probably make you VERY sick. You sleep VERY little, eat VERY little & they probably wouldn't know how to work in your treatments. Plus if you got deployed... Take it from us, you are better off.

I was in Navy and was a recruiter for awhile. There is no waiver of any kind to get you in. Sorry to say but, it would not be cost effect for the military. Not to mention it would limit them where they can send you.

My doctor mentioned once that a while back he had a patient go join the military and just kinda forget to mention cf. He passed all the physicals, made it through basic and was actually deployed somewhere in the middle east when he got sick with a "respitory infection" that just wouldn't clear. Finally he had to fess up and they had his tail on the next plane headed to the states and booted him. Not sure exactly what sort of discharge he got, medical? dishonorable? idk, he got a heck of a deal if he managed a legit discharge, health insurance for life.
I also had wanted to join the military, but pretty quickly realized that wasn't going to happen. Didn't stop me from talking to recruiters though. I got all sorts of free tshirts, etc. then I don't know who said what to him, but somehow the guy with the marines got wise to me and I never heard anything from any of the recruiters again.
