Can someone please tell me everything they know about CF and the military? Like, can I join the Army or Marines and defend this country? By the way I have CF.

Thanks,
Nate

When I was 19 yrs old I wanted to follow my Dad's bootsteps & be a US Army helicopter pilot.
When I tried to join the Army, I had to sign a form under penalty of perjury that I had no physical limitations I was hiding.
After the main physical, there was an interview with a doctor. (I believe he was a Major) During the interview I was asked about any diseases, limitations, etc. not covered by the standard physical form. I had to tell him I had CF. I was sent packing. 4-F. Need not re-apply.
However; I have seen posts from one man on this forum who had served in the Marines.
If your body is still in good shape, I don't know- you may be able to join. I will tell you this, honesty is the best policy. You are dealing with the Federal Government & you don't want to get caught lying.
Good luck. I'd love to know if you make it or not.

i spent 4 years at the Air Force Academy, 5 years active duty Air Force, and a few more years in the reserves. In the physical paperwork you must disclose any medical diagnosis in your record after age 12. I did not know I had CF until I entered the inactive ready reserve. I am now separated. asthma is an automatic disqualifying medical condition. I know people who tried to get into the military, but having asthma in their medical record past age 12 were denied. Others have faught the denial and took PFTs to prove they need no meds. I am guessing CF would be disqualifying based on the need for meds regardless of lung function. It is possible to serve your country as a civilian working in many military jobs or working for a government contractor. I would also worry about the conditions Ina any war zone causing quicker lung damage. Sorry no good news here.

Pat's (azdesertrat) statements are very accurate, even for todays Military. (Since he is a bit older) I agree with Pat, I wouldn't be dishonest with the Federal Government on a document. I actually think the Military is stricter these days. I can give an example: I have a 19 year old cousin who has been trying to get into the army for a year now. He is a perfectly healthy adult except he was born with a very small case of cerebral palsy in ONE foot. (due to being a twin) He's only had a few problems with it through out is life. Played soccer, hockey, football and running. Although, it makes one foot a size larger than the other so he needs a special shoe insert. The Military (or whoever is in charge of new comers) is making it impossible for him to join just because of ONE FOOT. He's fought with them for so long and has showed them proof all doctors visits, even a note from the doctor saying nothing has ever held him back. Pat mentioned paperwork. They do everything they possibly can. At one point they were going to make him sign papers saying if he were to be dismissed it would be specifically because of his foot and nothing else.

I hate to crush your hopes but it seems highly unlikely to join if you have CF. I'm sure you'll find something else you would love to do with your life that will serve a good purpose for being here.

Good Luck

I was wondering the same thing but being a cop instead. Its a nice thought but I know LAPD will not hire me once they look at my medical background. Cf has never really hindered me, I have never been on any cf meds. Even though I am a healthy cfer, I still wonder if I would of made it through the academy. I did some research and am now looking into a new line of work. Stinks that cf holds you back sometimes in life. I think I would of made a great female cop but I guess that's life.
