Dana, you are correct in the what you think of the blood test, they are looking for signs that the pancreas dose not work, then if that shows they then check for mutations.
The sweat test can help, but in this day and age, is it by no means tehe best test as it can be normal sweat numbers and still having CF ( like my son), Push for the full genetic test.

DS was diagnosed shortly after he was born, so he's never really been without enzymes; however, when he was a baby there were times when he probably didn't get enough enzymes. And when I'd ask what normal stools were supposed to look like I was told "you'll know" or that they'd be "bulky, greasy, foul smelling". His stools were never greasy, maybe a little shiny if I looked CLOSE, but I'd practially have to stick my face in the diaper to find that out.

Sorry if TMI, but his stools were "fluffy, like whipped cream cheese or whipped frosting. Sort of a yellowish green and smelled like feta cheese". I figured it was because he primary food was formula. Oh and one time, in the hospital, they were semi-solid and the color of green grass. The nurse told me they were PERFECT because he was on pregistimil (predigested) formula for a few days. I know its an old fashioned method but years ago they used to lick the baby to see if they tasted saltMy cf child is extremely salty and so maybe you could lick your child and see if she is salty???
If your child is salty then i would definately get a sweat test asap!!!
