Hi my name is kate im relatively new to this site so bear with me. i am 21 F wcf. i was diagnosed at the age of 3 in '89. i have been lucky with this disease so far because i have been relatively healthy until age 16 when i was colonized with B. Cepacia (thanks a lot boston childrens!) and ever since then i have had lower and lower pft's and its quite scary.
hopefully people on this site are not as judgmental as some people i have run into. A month before my 18th birthday i had an abortion at 9 weeks pregnant. the man i was dating at the time had a drinking problem and i wanted to keep the baby but he convinced me that it would be the wrong time, so i ended up getting the abortion as much as i knew i would regret it and oh do i. i have nightmares still and its been four years.
so basically i am posting this because i have been trying to get pregnant for the past two years now and it just seems impossible. i have lost a lot of weight this past year and weigh about 98 lbs down from 113 which is my normal weight at 5'4. i have been with this person for almost five years and we want a baby very badly. any suggestions on what will help? also i have very horrible painful periods. they have been pretty regular the past 8 to nine months which is unusual but i have a lot of pain in my left ovary and am proned to cysts.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not sure what will help, but i'm sure there are many people on this forum that will give you advice. i wasn't planning to get pregnant, but had no problem. i have been off my birth control for a while, screwed up so i was about to get back on it and i got pregnant.
my fev1 has been at a baseline for a while between 75%-85%, and i'm at a pretty healthy weight. i'm five foot and weighed 118 before pregnancy.
well good luck with everything, hope you get some answers and advice.

Hi Kate,

It's quite possible your struggles with infertility have nothing to do with your abortion. So please, don't beat yourself up about it. What's done is done. You can't change the past.

Some things that alarmed me about your post. Your weight for one. Are you fighting an infection right now? it's so important to have a healthy BMI in order to sustain pregnancy. Your weight could quite possibly be affecting your cycle and maybe you're not ovulating. These are all questions for your OB. I would do a few things.

-Tackle the weight issue

Tackle the menstral pain - find out if you have a condition causing the pain. For example, I have severe endometriosis. It is a condition in which the endomitrial tissue grows outside the uterus, possibly on your organs, as well as causing blood filled cysts to grow on the ovaries (endomitromas).

Tackle the addiction. I saw in a separate post, you are on methadone for addiction. I'm not sure it's a good idea to become pregnant while you are still actively being treated for such a severe addiction.

I know it seems like a lot of stuff to "fix" before you start down the baby road, but you want to be as healthy as can be before you bring a stress like pregnancy onto your body. Once the baby comes into the world it's difficult to mix daily CF maintenance therapies with a newborn's schedule, let alone a sick mommy with CF. I don't consider myself "sick' and I have PFTs in the mid 40's to low 50's. I do 3 nebulizer and vest treatments a day, as well as all the other pills and maintenance that goes along with daily CF obstacles.

With all that being said, the typical fertility hurdle for CFers is abnormal thick cervical mucus. This "brick wall" blocks the sperm from getting into your uterus/fallopian tubes, hence renders you infertile. Sometimes your OB can help you with the IUI process, to bypass this "brick wall" of mucus. But most of the time you have to be referred to a fertility specialist called a reproductive endocrinologist (aka RE).

I hope some of this helps. Most importantly, get yourself to a healthy weight. Minimum (for your height) should be 110-115. I am the same height as you and I weighed 112 before pregnancy and did just fine. And I hope you get well and off the methadone soon.

Welcome to the site. It's a great place with a diverse group of views and advice.

Some women cannot get pregnant with cf natural and have to go to IVF or IUI (hope I got that one right <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> ) due to the mucus buildup I believe. The first place to start is a fertility doctor. Best of luck to you.
