Modifier genes

I don't have any info on this unfortunately.

I was just wondering if someone could explain modifier genes.

To me they're like some sort of myth and kind of a default answer when doctors or other people are surprised that I am so healthy w/ CF.

How do you know if you have modifier genes or not?

NOTE: I know that other factors go into CF survival if we choose not to count mutations as a predictor of disease severity: environment, quality of care, complaince w/ meds and treatments.

(addendum: I wasn't compliant w/ treatments until ~6 months ago and also did plenty of things that were bad for my CF.)

Definition:

A gene that affects the phenotypic expression of another gene.

everyone has modifier genes.

genes affect how other genes are expressed. so you may have other genes in your DNA that affect how your cf genes are expressed.

Anyone who seriously thinks the vast different mutations have no bearing on our disease severity or progression...Well...Never mind.
