Mold/fungus

At my last hospital visit (March '08) I was informed by the floor doctor that a culture from last year had a fungus growth. What?!?!? No one ever told me !

So I asked my doctor about it - here was their reply: (I happened to have Scediosporum.)

<i>"Scediosporum is a fungus. FUNGUS is commonly grown in cultures of CF patients secondary to copious secretions in the airways.
Many patients that have this are <u>not</u> treated, unless they have an acute infection <u>unresolved</u> with antibiotics commonly used in an exacerbation. If after a 14 day course and s/s persist we may assume that the fungus is the source of the infection and treat with antifungals. This is not a microorganism to be alarmed about. IF you were having increasing symptoms unrelieved by standard cf therapies we would have started you on some type of therapy."</i>

This information eased my mind. I had no idea it was common to grow a mold. The problem is if it has seemed to overtake other common growths (PA, SA).

I was first tested for Aspergillus when my sputum and snot was fuzzy and blue. Yes, you read that correctly. I saved it and brought it to my doctor and they said it looks like aspergillus, and it was.

Also, when I had a scratch test done for allergies, the results showed that I'm allergic to molds and fungus.

About 5-6 years ago, I was tested for fungal growth I believe because I wasn't feeling well and my Dr wanted to cover all the bases. I ended up culturing aspergillus and was referred to an Infectious Disease (ID) specialist. He prescribed me an oral antibiotic. I believe I saw him only 3 times over the course of a couple months and in the end, I was no longer culturing it. So I'm pretty sure aspergillus will go away if treated right. Not sure about other fungus or molds.
