Morning lung pain

Hi everyone,

I noticed a lot of lung pain posts on here lately, but none of them talk about the same pain I'm having...so I thought I'd ask if anyone experiences this kind.

Occasionally when I sleep for a long period during the night (usually more than 8 hrs), I wake up with some strange pain. I remember having this pain since I was a teenager when I used to sleep in really late on the weekends.

When I wake up in the morning after a long sleep, it's almost like my lungs are "stuck". When I try to take a deep breath it hurts all throughout my lungs. The pain usually subsides after an hour after I wake up.

Someone on another CF discussion group told me he experienced the same morning pain and asked his doctor about it. His doctor said something along the lines of that the lining of the lungs might be getting stuck overnight due to shallow breathing and that's causing some sort of restriction and pulling in the morning when deeper breaths are taken.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this pain.

Thank you!

I think it might be that you breath really shallow when you sleep.
And that somehow your lungs have to expand again?... Or that you feel your breathing muscles when you breath deeper again?... Really not sure how it works, but can imagine it's something like that.

Could it possibly be that your mattress is worn out and its causing your body/lungs to be sore? I get that sometimes b/c our mattress sinks in certain places and it reeks havock on both our backs sometimes. I'll have bad aches in the morning but then they go away.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. It'd be nice if it was a simple as that, hugh?

Another thought is mucus plugs.
Do you find you are junky in the morning? Does the pain go away after you've been up for a short while?

If it's a plug, it's stuck in a spot, but after it moves, then the pain is gone.

I get plugs from time to time - it's a sharp pain when I breath, but will go away after a few breathes. At least I assume they are plugs.
