Motivation

Hello Everyone,
My name is Tim and I'm new to this forum. I've been reading and looking around for a few months, but this is my first post.
My girlfriend has CF and I'm looking for ideas on how to help motivate her to exercise more. She is not totally against exercise. She started hiking a little, but after a month or so, she got bored with it. I think that is partially because I am deployed right now and she was doing it on her own, but also she was telling me about having to stop a lot to catch her breath and I wonder if she was trying too much. ...Like running before walking, she started out trying to hike to the top of a mountain. lol ...Granted, there's a paved hiking path, but it's still a mountain.
I'm looking for ideas on exercise that we could do together when I get home. Something that wouldn't be too strenuous, but would still help cardiovascular strength and endurance. I originally thought we could run together, but thats probably too much and she wasn't a big fan of that idea. I'm not too big on running either, so I understand. Anyway, we thought about getting a membership to the spa/gym by my house so we could get into swimming. We both like that idea, but I'm looking for more ideas to keep us both interested in exercising vs just doing it because we should. Know what I mean? Any tips and ideas would be appreciated! Thanks.

Motivation is hard for me too, but the best thing is probably to mix it up. Try different things to keep it interesting so you guys don't get bored doing the same things. Ice skating is a good workout too, especially if you try to race each other every once in a while I don't know where you guys are located or what you like to do but what about joining some kind of rec league together like softball or something? Its not constant running but its still a great workout! Good luck finding new stuff to do!

I've been dealing with the same issue... I've found the ONLY way to get me to do it is to have a planned schedule. Something I can type out and out on my fridge for instance.
I tried doing "Mon, Wed, Fri I do abs and legs" etc. But even that wasn't specific enough, because I'd find myself not pushing or challenging myself, and I'd get bored. Now I have to actually say I'm doing THIS exercise on THESE days, then next Monday I add THIS many reps, etc. That way not only did I KNOW what I was suppose to be doing, but also knew what I was looking forward to and had goals to reach.

She is very blessed to have you, because my biggest problem is that I'm doing it by myself, if you are doing it with her and you do you hiking/jogging/walking/gym/what ever you decide on AS a couple, that should help tremendously!

Thanks. I think I am the one who is blessed to have her. She was in the hospital recently. ...Nothing too serious, but it shocked me back into the reality of things. I just want to find some ways to stay healthy while minimizing the feeling that everything is a chore, you know?

I agree about mixing it up. Ice skating is a good idea. I'm stationed in Germany right now. This is where she will be moving in with me. I'm sure we could find a rink somewhere. I think the more non-gym-like the exercise, the more interested she will be in doing it. She used to play softball, actually... Only problem is I'm terrible at it and it never really caught my interest. ...But maybe we could find some batting cages though!

I sometimes have the same problem as well although I try to force myself to at least run if I can't get to the gym. I was also going to recommend team sports. I did leagues in my area (NYC) through Zog Sports. I think it's national...but I am not sure. They have a website. Anyway, I did dodgeball which was fun and you got a workout, but it wasn't crazy and if it was you can alternate turns. They have a ton of other sports too including softball. You can also choose the competitiveness of it so you aren't playing with professionals . the best part is if you win in your league the proceeds you put in go to a charity of your choice. I think going to the gym together does help, I am unmotivated sometimes but if my fiance is going too i will do the elliptical to break up my constant jogs. Hope you both find something!

hello

Cycling would be something low impact that you guys could do together...my bf just got a bike, and it's fun exploring new places with him. Only catch is that bikes are pretty expensive...you could probably get a good deal on e-bay, or at wal-mart or something though.

Swimming would also be fun...and I love the ice skating suggestion! If you guys join a gym, you could try out the different classes together, and if the gym has a pool - even better. Also, maybe train for an event - like a Great Strides 5K walk (benefiting CF research in the process!)...I know Hal higdon has training programs for 5Ks, and I'm sure there are lots of other training guides as well.

Have fun!
