Moving to a big boy bed

Our 2 1/2 year old has just recently learned to climb out of his crib. We are thinking about moving to a big boy bed, but he has a feeding tube and we are a little worried about that. Anybody made the switch and can give any advice on that. Thanks!

My daughter is almost 4, with a feeding tube. About 6 months ago we switched to a bed, but it was more about her wanting a big girl bed, she never climbed out. WE put up bed rails, so while she can get out, she waits for us -- always.

You might consider putting the pump in the backpack it came with or some other small bag and place it by his feet or on a hook, then if he gets up, he'll need to learn to grab the backpack. If you tape the tubing down his leg, like we do for my daughter to go to sleep, even if he forgets to grab the bag, it won't pull his button out, just trail behind.

Emily stayed in her crib waaayy too long, primarily because I was freaked out about her g-tube in a big-girl bed. I was convinced that she'd get herself out of bed and pull it out. It hasn't happened. I think that she feels the tug, even in her sleep and automatically stops herself. It just hasn't been a problem.

We don't tape the tube like Heather does or anything. There are times when she has it wrapped around her multiple times - I can never understand how she gets herself like that. But, again, she's never pulled it out.

I do have a horrible mommy story I could share...it involves me in the shower and her having woken up having to pee...I found her standing in the middle of her room, still hooked up, sobbing, "Mooooomyyyy! I have to go potty soooooo baaaaad!" Uuuugh. I felt so terrible. Poor thing. She was so determined to not have an accident in her room, but she was just stuck! We made it just in time, and I've never again taken a shower while she was in bed and we were home with out Dad.

One thing we did to minimize the equipment in her room next to her new bed: We mounted a small, decorative shelf above her headboard, and a hook ( like a coat hook - same color as her wall, so it blends in)about a foot above that. The pump is fastened to the shelf with self-stick velcro, and the bag hands on the hook. We used to use an iv pole for the pump and the bag, but I just didn' t like the idea of that when she had friends over to play in her room. When not it use, you really don't notice the shelf or the hook at all.

Good luck with all this. I totally understand where you are coming from - as I said, the thought of it freaked me out. Congatulations to your little guy on his big boy bed!

I am so glad you asked this question! I have been wondering the same thing about our almost two year old... It is so nice to know there are others out there with the same types of questions and answers that only Cf Mommies can understand and wonder - They don't teach these kinds of things in parenting books or magazines!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Thanks!!!
