So there have been a lot of stories about MRSA on our news lately in the New England area (and nationally, I think). My mom was questioning whether the lungs kind that we Cystics have is contagious. I guess there have been a few cases of the skin kind and kids dying because they didnt wash thier sports equipment and whatnot. I was told when I contacted MRSA that it was not contagious expect to immuno-suppressed ppl.

My question and not that I can really do much about it except wash my hands and cover my mouth...is how contagious is it? Can I pass it onto children who may have cuts or is it a totally different kind? Since I work with kids (and if they were immune suppressed, they wold most likely not be in school) it is a concern for me. My mom wants me to call and ask the doc, but wtf am I gonna do if I am contagious? I work with kids, thats my job. And all I do is sub, so I am not obligated to tell them my health concerns.

My understanding is we colonize it and so does the majority of the medical workforce. The difference is that it negatively effects us because of our damaged lungs where the medical people just act as carrier spreading it from one immune compromised patient to another.

You could give your doctor a call and I think they'll tell you this same thing. If you were working in a medical facility I would think ethically you would need to disclose it but with healthy school children I don't think it's relevant.

^^^ Yep, what Lauren said. I've been told we colonize it in our lungs. I would bet every healthcare worker out there colonizes it as well.

But, I have also been told to be careful of sputum touching open wounds or scratches to be safe.

I've wondered, so what happens if I have an open wound in my mouth?
