MRSA question

Sorry I've had so many questions lately. I got copies of my sons medical records from his old CF clinic and found out some interesting things I was not aware of. As some of you have read in my other post, this is how I found out what my son's other mutation was.

He has cultured staph aureus quite a few times (in fact, almost always, but I knew this). But upon reviewing the records I saw a report that said he cultured amoxicillin resistant staph once, was put on Bactrim I believe (I'd have to look through the records again) and never cultured it again. Is this the same as MRSA? I wonder why he didn't tell me this. This is the only time its mentioned in the records or shows up on a lab slip from a throat culture, so I guess if it was MRSA its nothing to worry about now anyway.

MRSA stands for methicillen resistant staph areus. In the culture report there are sensitivities to tell what the staph is sensitive to and resistant to. I think there are many types of staph you can get not just MRSA. Methicillen and amoxicillen are two different drugs but in a similar class(pretty sure don't quote me on this). Anyhow, I'm sure your doc or CF nurse could review this stuff for you so you know what type of staph your child may grow and what it is sensitive to.

I am not sure if it is the same thing as MRSA. When I look over my daughters culture reports, it reads 'methicillen resistant staph areus' and then it will list what it is sensitive to. And sometimes they culture that plus staph areus and it too will list what it is sensitive to. If it was MRSA and it is gone, that is great news! We have never been able to get rid of it, even after two weeks on IV vancomycin. We are now on Zyvox due to a MRSA flare up.

Up until about 6 months ago, I never asked to see our reports. But I recently requested they copy them for me for over the past two years and to get me copies of them after each appt. I keep them in a seperate binder for each child along with any notes I have, and blood lab reports and copies of the PFT report. I also ask for copies of chest x-ray or ct scan reports and keep them in the file. I also have a printed a height and weight chart off the internet and keep track of that information in their files as well. Do you think I am going a little overboard?
I just want to be informed and know what the heck they are talking about and to keep track of these trends myself.

At our clinic in Cincinnati, we have internet access to their medical records. It's called the Cystic Fibrosis Portal. After the visit, 3-5 day, u can see what your childs culture was. Also, at the clinic visit they give u copies of their notes and PFTs, just wondering if other CF centers do this.

Rebecca- Thanks for helping me clear that up. Since amoxicillin is in that class, I thought amox. resistant staph could maybe be called methicillin resistant staph. I think it may have just been amox. resistant so they put him on a different med. He does culture Staph aureus all the time though and doesn't get treatment unless its causing symptoms.

Tammy- I don't think its overboard at all! I really like reading their notes and getting to see what they think about the current situation. Docs don't always tell you everything, sometimes mine just tell me what they think I need to know. Especially when my son was first diagnosed, I guess they didn't want to overwhelm me. I intend on keeping up on all his records now that I have all his past ones. And I'll tell you, they could really come in handy. My son's are really important to his SSI case and could help us win his appeal.

2perfectboys- We don't have that at my son's clinic, and didn't have it at his old clinic before we moved either. But it sounds wonderful. I could always call and ask the nurse for test results or call the records dept. and ask them to send me copies and wait for weeks, but your clinic's way sounds much easier- for the staff and for the patients/families! I did like that at my son's old clinic the CF nurse coordinator had a separate line and voice mail. At the new clinic I have to ask the receptionists to tell her what the problem is and then they tell her to call me back.

Thank you all so much for the replies. I wasn't too too worried because he hasn't cultured it since but more just curious.

A billion things are resistant to amox. It's such an ancient antibiotic i'm shocked whenever I hear that its prescribed......

So have amox resistant staph isn't anything to freak out about.

Thanks Amy. I was just shocked to see resistant staph in his medical records and since amoxicillin is in the methicillin family of drugs...
