Faith just came home a few days ago with a port on her sternum. They had considered putting it in her arm, but didn't. She is also on home IV's and has been for the past 7 months. Her PICC lines have just quit working.

I don't think it will be much different having it in his arm as opposed to his chest. Faith was in the hospital for 7 days and that's because her PFT's were down slightly and they wanted to get them back up before she went home.

It is sore for a little while, but I hear it will clear up after a while. When she is not accessed, there is a little bump about 2 inches that sticks out and that's because where they put it there is no fat. It usually flushes against the skin.

He shouldn't be in the hospital that long if that's all he's getting. I hear the port is the best thing to have, except for the fact the needle needs to be changed once a week and at first that was pretty tender.

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

I was in ambulatory surgery when I got my port placed. I had it placed and was leaving an hour or two after I woke up. So you shouldn't be away long. Healing was less than cool, it was tender and pretty damn sore for a while. But it is TOTALLY worth it, I recommend a port to just about anyone I talk to. Changing the needle once a week is no big deal, because the needles are thin and tiny and not very painful. On top of that, it gives you a huge allowance for independence that you don't have with PICCs.

Thanks Emily and Carol, will let you know how we get on.It is definately needed as every central, longline etc lasts hours.I think they are worried about his age,3, and his having mrsa,in case it got into blood. Its in his lungs.
The hardest thing I find about going away to go to hospital is my other son seems to het really upset as we dont have immediate family ariound here and my friends all muck in.Their dad who I am with just doesnt seem to function without me and would never remember conor needs dinners, bed and baths. Is this a general man thing???Or just the irish men???
Thanks for replying. It doesn't seem so bad when you speak to someone who has gone through it.Cheers,xx

Oh one other thing that I hope helps make you less anxious. I have MRSA too. Had it before they placed my port. And I haven't had a single problem with infection in my port. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
