MRSA

Ok. Can someone clear up a few things for me about MRSA? It hits home to me because we have a young relative with it that the children play with.
Ok, so where all can MRSA live? I have heard nose, anus, lungs?
When a CFer gets it, is it automatically in their lungs? Does everyone that has MRSA get boils? I've heard of it taking lives, if so, can't they use bactirim (sp?) for all cases (isn't this what they use when CFers get it??
I might be totally off on some of this stuff, but I am just so confused about MRSA and feel that I should be more informed on it as we have a relative that has it and then Parker with his Cf.
HELP!

There are two forms, hospital acquired and community acquired MRSA. It can live in the skin, nose, armpits...anywhere where sweat glands are. Most cases are skin related (i.e. boils). If the wound is cared for properly and covered, there should be little risk of spreading the infection. My son cultured it in his lungs and in his nose and showed NO symptoms whatsoever. His last two cultures have been clean so I dont think he's carrying it anymore but I understand your concern. Good luck.

So if a person has it on the skin, does that necessarily mean that they have it in their nose as well and everywhere else? Would it only be transferred by the boils that this person has? Do the hospital and community acquired strains run different courses?

Not necessarily. You can have a boil (skin type) and not have it anywhere else. (I believe) No, this can be transferred by touching something that has the bacteria on it, coughing, etc...that's the scary part. Community is supposed to be harder to treat than hospital, but I'm not really sure about how each strain effects the person. Like I mentioned, they put my son on bactrium even though he had no symptoms and now he doesn't even culture it. MRSA is everywhere and you can drive yourself nuts trying to figure it out..I did. Just practice really good hygeine and make sure toys, surfaces, etc. are cleaned with a product that will kill the bacteria. You can go on the DCD website to get a list of cleaning agents.
Hope that helps.
