I too have a real difficult time to get mucus up on occasion especially when asked for it on demand. On my clinic visits when they ask for a sample, I ALWAYS have to be induced.

Some of my mucus busters are:
albuterol (like Eric mentioned)
guaifenesin (like Debra mentioned)
ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory that helps me with mucus, though my pulmonologist doesn't see it)
yoga moves that involved inversion (like postural drainage, but more severe)
traditional chest PT by my husband who was a drummer in high school and college (he did also have one training session by an RT too :).
