I do my treatments twice a day (vest, and nebs) And i can't catch a break! I even wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air and coughing my head off. Some night i puke others nights i take numerous puffs of my inhaler and try to get some sleep. I currently am not on any antibiotics but a month ago came off one that i was taking for 3 months. Within a few days of being off an antibiotic im right back where i started The mucus just continually flows. I have tried Fizzy NAC which helps a little but it is so expensive. Is there anything that you have tried that works in controlling the mucus. I know that it needs to come out, but do i have to fill up a cup every 2 days!?

Some one help me!

the only way ive ever know to reduce sputum production is Iv antibiotics....and when im off them i inhale amikacin currently and stay on rotating orals. now its zythromax and avelox.

if I take no antibiotics the sputum production is higher. do you have bronchiectasis....and how extensive is it? that can also effect how much sputum you have and what colour is it?

when I get too much sputum on orals then do an Iv....after Ivs used to have no sputum production for about 4 w eeks or so...but now with the bronchiectasis spreading I always have production...more than i like on some days...

for some flovent and advair help sputum production or oral prednisone...i dont find it that helpful...r uyou on a prednisobne inhaler?

I have the same problem and I am on oral Bactrim 365 days a year, though when I am on IV's it seems to help dry me up somewhat, also the Cayston seemed to give more of a dry hack but towards mid day and into evening I have small waxed dixie cups in every room of the house. All I have to do is bend to tie my sneaker or pick up something on the floor and a wave of it comes pouring out, I sleep with o2 and I still cough in the middle of the night any chg. in position causes more flow. But I also have severe Bronchesesis(spelt wrong) it's just something we will always have. I do use a cough supressant if I am going out to a show or movie it helps somewhat, but not for a long period of time. sorry can't have more postive info. Pat-56/CF

Yes i do have brochestatsis not sure how bad. I know that my upper lobes are the problem. I do take advair, albutorol, hyper sal, pulmozyme. I always have less production on antibiotics but i really dont want to be on them 365. plus my intestines get all out of wack while on them. My sputum is always green. Once in a while i go on predinisone but it makes me crazy so that is only if i desperately need it. As of lately every antibiotic i have been on i have some side effect i cant take Vanco- redmans, Linizolid/zyvox- drop in platelet count and bad bleeds, minocycline- intestine problems and ringing in the ears. I think i am a lost cause. UGH!

you are never a lost cause, just finding the right cocktail is waiting. but the sputum is just one of the bad things to get used to... my sputum was green for years now it's beige/brown I stay away from steriods as they cause me to bleed. I've had the ringing in the ears as well, hearing loss also I was fitted for hearing aids abt 6yrs ago don't wear them all the time, they pick up to much back round noises. I just try to keep a postive attitude, in spite of all the pain in the ass issues. Pat-56/CF
