Thanks for all the replies!
Both of the boys have decided that they want to try to play the clarinet. Im going to look into buying their own, Id be more comfortable that way. Ive been told I can get them for about $500 apiece, now I just have to come up with the funds!

If you go to a reputable dealer (music shop) you can get a used one that has been thoroughly cleaned and pretty safe.
I bought my flute used (I think flutes and clarinets are different in the fact that a layer of flute can be taken off during the cleaning, once or twice in its lifetime... I'm not sure if that's the same with clarinets). In anycase used can be a whole heck of a lot cheaper. Also ask how they clean the instrument if you don't want to take their word for it. Additionally if they decide to drop band and go into a sport in the future you won't have lost a ton of money off of it.

If you want brand new, ask for payment plans. Not sure about Canada but here in the US you can do a "rent to own" plan on a brand new instrument. We bought ds's violin that way. Then, if they change their mind, you're not out the full amount.

Go for it.  I am a piano teacher (and also have played
trombone, trumpet, violin, viola) and love that your boys are
interested in music.  Could you speak with their band teacher
and "reserve" one instrument just for them?  Also,
another option may be purchasing a beginner model of whatever
instrument they choose.  These are getting more and more
reasonable.<br>

Getting them involved in a music group will also give them another
creative outlet.  There is nothing like creating music
together.

You can get a <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.worldwideinstruments.com/Clarinet_Bb_Beg_Gallery.html">student clarinet</a> for way cheaper than 500 dollars <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
